Make IBZ from Strat Neck

Has anyone tried this before; take a Strat Neck and convert the headstock to an Ibanez shape?

I would imaging a Paddle Headstock would accomodate, but I was curious how close a Strat was to an Ibanez end-state size.

I'm not sure on the size if you would get the shape on there but i dont think it would look right as an ibanez headstock has an angle where as a strat headstock is just straight. it would just look very odd to me :s

Yeah... but the JS Neck is a non-Tilt; so I'm guessing the only question is the if the length/width of the strat headstock would accomodate making the change to an Ibanez Headstock.

JS AT and other Ibanez headstocks are straight as well.

Probably possible to trace the outline over a Fender picture, if you got the skills to do so.

Re: Make IBZ from Strat Neck

I just did something similar on a project -- see the thread entitled "New Project -- Surf Green Iby" or something like that (link: http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f18/ne...iby-86043.html). That neck started as an oversized "paddle" style Roadstar II neck onto which I traced the new shape and cut it down. Turned out fine.

While trying to figure out what other necks might work for that project, I checked out several large headstock style Fender/Squire necks. The regular small Fender headstock will NOT work, but... the 70s style big headstocks are really close. You would have to make some minor adjustments in the shape, but it wouldn't be noticeable once you were done. Another possibility for you are the Stew-Mac necks with an unfinished, paddle headstock. Those run around $129 and from my research seemed like the best option for an aftermarket neck to fit on a square-heel JS or other Iby. That's an excellent company and they don't sell junk.

Good luck,
Bert

Apparently Joe prefers them that way -- he comes from a strat playing background and the JS neck is much like a good, well crafted strat neck with a few refinements. Although they're non-tilt, they do have a big drop from the plane of the neck to the plane of the headstock. That allows for sufficient break angle over the nut so that there's no problem with anemic sustain.

surely he didn't do it just for aesthetic purposes?

Good point -- I don't know whether he likes 'em that way because of tone, stability, or something else. I recall this being discussed in some very old threads (like 5+ years ago), but I can't remember what they said.
