Hello i've been gassing for a project lately and i run across this dress.
Me and my wife were looking at clothes and BAM this hit me for a try at a floral fabric finish.
What do you think? and any tips project guitar doesn't share?
i know modge podge sucks and to use lacquer sealer.AND i wanted to use urethane clear over it if possible.
edit : Im doing a CF build, (basically a fancy fabric top , if you want some suggestions, feel free to pm me.
edit 2: didnt see your request for info at the bottom of the picture
Suggestions
1) use electrical tape in combination with masking tape for a better edge line
2) use some cotton balls to plug holes, but remove them after they get wet with sealer
3) I bought sanding sealer at lowes in a big jug. Thinner then mod podge, but seems to work a lot better (for this application). cost was 29$ for a gallon. I will use maybe a cup total for everything if you can find a smaller container.
4) buy LOTS of razor blades!
5) buy good quality sand papers
6) any good quality clear coat will be fine dude.
7) use a GOOD, STRONG spray glue adhesive to attach the fabric. You wont have problems with bunching up of dried glue, it being too thick, etc. I bought some 3m spray stuff, its literally like spray super glue and works INCREDIBLY well. Wont have that peel up problem that guy on project guitar had. It bonds and dries much faster too (not CRAZY fast, but curing time is about 30 minutes isntead of over night lol)
8) with the sanding sealer, Id do about 3 or 4 coats. Spread it out over an hour each coat. Let dry overnight. Then do another couple the next day. Let sit for 24 hours before trying to "finish" it.
this is really cool.
make sure to buy 2 dresses, one for the guitar and the another one for the wife.
So when the guitar is done, you can obviously take a pic with wife holding the guitar using the dress.
okay, i don't speak english, so,
Or maybe he could use the other dress on gigs? Lightning fast solos and a dress that goes well with the guitar! Maybe Vai should use this trick sometimes..
Is that paper or fabric?
you are crazy good at everything lol.
and yeah i wanted 2 dresses but it was a second hand store and they had only one lol.
if i could do what you did i would copy the pattern for future use so if i mess up ill have another one.
wow,
try to find some more dress options somewhere.
That Jem Floral Pattern i did is a real fabric, exactly like the original one applied on the real Jem bodies.
I've used to work in a company that makes DIGITAL PRINTS in real fabric, just like that:
All of above are Digital Prints on fabric.
I just did a VECTOR version of the floral pattern in CorelDraw X5 and did some pimp on Photoshop.
The final format is a huge TIFF with @ 450DPI resolution.

Not really sure why I clicked on such an ominous thread title, but that could actually make a damn sweet guitar - always been intrigued by fabric finishes, so will keep an eye on this one.
Hey andrewsfury, I wanted to see how a floral would look with your pattern. I think it looks wicked. I can't wait to see the real thing when you're finished.
That's awesome! I am really anxious to see the finished guitar now. It would be epic to see one of my renders actually come to life. Make sure to post a lot of photos and then we can compare the before and after. Looks good so far, andrewsfury.
on your first post (picture of the dress) i thought omg noooo it looks bad,but after seeing it on the guitar it looks truely awsome lol, looking forward to seeing the end product.
dude I hope your fabric is much easier to deal with then carbon fiber this sucks!!! its gonna take much longer then I thought to finish this thing
Neck is done, electronics are ready and waiting, have my pickups ready to go.... Just need the body finished!!!! Grr!
Also, do your first few coats of sealer the first day, and wait to trim until the stuff has cured the next day. My carbon smoothed out REALLY well with a new razor blade after the stuff dried, probably be the same for you
thats what i got the 90 but im wood top not paint and the fabric might not take as well as the carbon.
i'm gonna try the sealer for glue and modge podge as glue.

hmm, did you try spreading it out? It can spray on a little thick. Wont argue the carbon is definitely thicker though I wasnt trying to mislead you or anything, it worked great for me. Sorry!! That stuff isnt cheap, hopefully you will get other uses out of it!!!
the sealer for glue should be fine, but id be worried about how well it would stick... but on bare wood, may bond the grain to the fabric
Ditto on the 3M 90 adhesive spray -- I had bad luck with it. It initially adhered great and I was pleased. However, although I let it dry several days, it reacted badly with the Park's sanding sealer I used to fill/seal the pores and turned into a mess. Had to discard the fabric and start over. So it wasn't necessarily the 3M's fault -- it was the combination of 3M plus the particular sealer I used. I know better than to combine chems without first testing the combination on scrap, so this was a stupid error.
Moral of story -- experiment with all steps before doing your actual project.
and finally im trying elmers glue all ( using alot it makes all fabric darker , using just enough perfect) if the sealer works with the elmers its the one.
if all else fails titebond has a new glue called Melamine and dries clear , for gluing vynil and rubber and metal to wood.
but i think the elmers glue all is spot on so far.
Gives me goose bumps. Looks fantastic. You really are doing a great job. Can't wait to see how you tackle the black fade around the rim of the body...[/QUOTE
thanks , yeah after i seal the body and paint the back , sides , and cavites (and paint the cavities with conductive shielding before all that) ill work on the burst. its going to be a small 1\2 inch burst so it will be tricky.
be sure to do MANY coats of sanding sealer........ try to fill ALL of the material's grain (make it dead flat)......... It takes a lot longer and a lot more coats of clear to fill the material with clear than it does sealer.
Im still super butt hurt It would have been glorious... I have enough for one more try... Im STILL debating it... I love my flippy floppy paint, but ... well im thread jacking now.
We are patiently (not) awaiting floral guitar heaven Id send a good picture to steve vai when you get done
