I used meguiars carneuba wax on my strat plus and it worked like a charm. To clean any grime just use a damp cloth and wipe it clean, then apply a thin coat of the wax and buff it to a shine. The nice thing is that when you use wax it serves two purposes at the same time because your frets will be nice and shiny once you're done.

Re: Maple Fretboard protection

It's hard to say really. It's going to boil down on how often you play the guitar. The easiest way to approach it would be to maybe do it once a month, and that might even be too often. The nice thing about finished maple fretboards is that you can clean them so much easier than a rosewood or ebony board because all you have tyo do is use a damp rag and wipe it clean to get all the grime off.
