Modular guitar design - Among other things * (Rant)

This has been bugging me for the last two days

This original concept was created by Leo Fender so that a guitar's neck could be replaced quite easily. However obtaining the neck is another matter. *Or was it just a manufacturing issue?

Leo's idea has flaws in it. Why does the Tele and strat have different neck pockets? one does not fit in another and the other leaves gaps. if this was a vision of maintenence then they should have been the same but....

Also the idea of interchangeable necks (Great thought it is) depends on availibility of parts and a standardisation of build.

This news is old to some but think about it. If a bolt on neck design was standard it would end a lot of grief.

The old standard IS the strat but with new nnovative ideas (The AANJ and Washburn's Stephens cutaway, Yamaha's Z design) getting a replacement neck would be a nightmare for these guitars.

Also new design ideas like the jem jack socket could be made available on all guitars. Take a standard strat jack plate and put it upside down on the side. No special routing is required just an oval hole.

I tell you, I'd like to be in charge on Warmoth guitar parts. ...and on that note

Has anybody had an Ibanez replacement neck from them? They say they will cut the headstock shape of your choice if you send in a tracing. I quite fancy a Clapton profile ebony fretboard straight through (Satch style) for my Power

Strat and Telly necks are available from many different vendors and are quite reasonable in price. Even the Ibanez neck pocket has "Fenderesque" specs.

But with any "after market" part, some modification is nesessary(sp?).

Ideas like the Jem output jack and the different style neck joints are unique to the companies that use them. Don't look for them to be used by others until the copyrights are sold, and that won't happen.

Warmouth does NOT make Ibanez replacement necks. I have spoken to them at length on the phone about this. They won't even cut the headstock. They do, however, use the Wizard profile. So...you can get a Jackson 24 fret neck with the Wizard profile...but good luck using it on an Ibanez body.

I believe it had to do mostly with productio, ease of assembly and repair. Replacing the necks was not part of the equasion... glen

Welcome to proprietary parts and monopolization of your own replacement pieces.

Glen is right though. *It was the ease of production over a glued-on Gibson type neck that allowed them to cut costs and sell more guitars to more people.

Custom Peghead
http://www.warmoth.com/frames.buttons/frames16.htm

*

Send us a full size drawing or tracing of the design you would like and we will quote a price.
Generally between $35 and $55

Looks like you can now. If they are advertising EB/MM headstocks then making a custom Ibanez one shouldn't be hard.
