more questions (fretting about fret buzz)

Its my 3120 (by the way, the bridge and springs stuff has been solved) I may just be acting neurotic but with a guitar like this Ive got a right to be

anyway, the 5th string is buzzing quite a bit at the 12th fret. I've already got the action quite high (2.75 at the low e and 2.5 at the high e) and the neck bow is 0.7 mm. So Im wondering where this problem is coming from. Would it be poor craftsmenship on the fret? Is there an easy solution to this problem that doesnt include raising the action even more.

EDIT: changed the title to a wicked cool pun!

I'm no authority on the subject, but I'd suggest trying Rich's fret-rocking technique next (it helped me in the past.)

You want to take a genuine straight edge, no plastic or wood, I use the edge of a little 6-inch steel rule, and lay it down across the frets, next to your A-string (in this case) then see if it'll rock on the 13th fret. If it does, the 13th is high, which is why your 12th is buzzing.

It seems likely in this case, because if your action was too low there'd be more buzzing in other spots. I think.

Now, if the fret is high, Rich's remedies range from blatting it with a hammer (which scares me) to very gradually sanding it down (which scares me too, just a bit less.)

Best of luck!

Oh yeah and, in a tech forum that's mostly filled with questions, a subject more revealing than "more questions" might help us all out a little.

well my last thread was "questions I need anwsers too" which may not be specific but it gets people to view it. But I will change the topic name for more clearity.

thanks for your help.

there is a little bit more buzzing along the a string, but its all tolerable, the buzzing at the 12th is just bad.

To "rock" on a fret the neck has to be straight. You might find the 12th is low, you'll be able to see that with the straight edge.

in this case I think the rocking thing works. The reasons are 2 fold

1) in an area such as the 12th fret the neck bow is negligable, its a calculus pricinpal (slopes of tangents)

2) the rocking is occuring in the opposite way the neck bows.
