My Evolutions sound like single coils :|

Well after finally getting myself a set and having them installed, i get home to find that they have no sustain, no 'bark' and have less output than my original stock ibanez i know this isnt the pickups....as they are **** hot as everyone knows. so have they just been wired wrong?

any help would be appreciated so much as i am £250 down with nothing to show for it

Re: My Evolutions sound like single coils :|

Sounds like it. Gently rub the tip of a metal screwdriver on the pole pieces on ech side of the pickup, if you get a very different sound from the amp you'll know that one of the coils isn't connected.

If both pickups sounds iffy, then chances are that they have been installed with incorrect wiring (parallel rather than series).

Then learn the lesson - check stuff before you leave the shop, don't wait until you are at home!

Yeah, you wired them wrong. You might want to pay a tech to install them if you really don't know what your doing.

lol, i tech did install them. i am questioning his knowledge right now :P i am going to a place in manchester tomorrow to get things sorted, they know what they are doing and have plenty of axes armed with evos that show just how poorly mine sound. whether it be wiring, faulty pickups or whatever, i will get these things flowing as they should be

Well when you got back to the Teck, bring with you a copy of a wiring guide.

http://www.dimarzio.com/media/diagrams/C.pdf

Maybe this will help.

heh, 1st time i got new pickups for an RG i left it at the store so the "tech" would do a good job, cause i didnt feel up to the challenge...

long story short, i had to learn how to install pups myself with that very axe, and those very two pickups...

that sucks, its funny that a tech couldnt even install pickups right, it seems like every local guitar tech around here is the same though, they charge outrageous prices and cant even do it right, dont feel bad buddy

Re: My Evolutions sound like single coils :|

Unfortunately not all guitar techs were created equal.

I have had ok work done by most people, but for very varied pricing. It seems that the more the shop itself is impressed with it's own size/reputation the worse you get.

The tech I use now is absolutely fantastic. His setups are the best ever. He actually does customisation work rather than telling me it is impossible to do stuff because he doesn't have the skill to do it (he always has the skill, but you know what I mean). He will source and install anything I like, that it is physically impossible to fit to a guitar (I was actually told by a famous UK guitar shop, by a personal friend who works there that they refused to source floyd rose parts as the are "only interested in Gibsons and Fenders now"). He always tells me when I am wrong, without exception. He isn't the cheapest, but not the most expensive by a long way. And most importantly: He tolerates all the really stupid ideas I have with only the most minimal of eye rolling .

The moral of the story; like Dentists, once you find a good guitar tech don't go anywhere else, and never lose his number.

PS anyone in the southern england who wants this guys details shoot me a pm.

Re: My Evolutions sound like single coils :|

i went up to the store where i ordered the pickups from. they plugged my axe in, compared it to a jem (also with evos in) and basically looked confused at what the hell had happened. They said my guitar had lost over half the output. So now im leaving in their (hopefully capabale hands) untill the end of next week when i can pick it up. They seem like they know what they are doing, so i have high hopes

as for the other guitar tech, im going to see him on saturday with a large axe and a wallet wanting to be refilled.

Re: My Evolutions sound like single coils :|

It is possible that he got his schematics wrong, ie he was following duncan schematics or whatever, and never really checked the guitar for full output just checked it on clean to see if it was working. I know of alot of techs who do this and it just boggles my mind. Im personally horrible with electronics, i have ogre hands, but thats not to say i cant do good setups. Before ill leave a customer with a ****ty guitar i always get one of my great tech friends to give it a shot, even if it means paying out of my own pocket (he doesnt charge me usually i often help him out with setup work, as hes horrible with floyds)
