My first Re-Paint

Ok, so i got this B.C. Rich warlock for my 16th birthday in 1997 and it's seen a lot of gigs and unfortunately a lot of abuse. since i've had my Ibanez's it's not really been played and just sat there looking very sad and sorry indeed, so i thought "Right time for some TLC".

I'm a car painter by trade so wasn't afraid of getting stck in to it. so here are the progress pics (if i post them correctly) :

This is the origional translucent red. You cant see, but all the points are chipped and dented.

Naked! after about 1 hour with a block and 180 grit

Nearly there, bit of work to do in the horns

After the body was stripped of all the paint with 180, i damped off the wood to raise the grain, let it dry, then blocked it with 500 grit for a super smooth finish. I then gave it a couple of clear coats to seal the wood and give me a smooth finish to work on. Looks good like this!

When dry, i used 800 grit wet and blocked the clear coat to get it flat. i then tinted some clear coat with blue acrylic enamel to give the clear coat a translucent effect. i did the same thing with red in the clear to flick around the edges to send it purple.

The red didn't go on very strong and only slightly tinted the edges purple, so i mixed some purple in to some clear coat and when dry, dusted it around the edges again. it's a lot darker but still traslucent, which is what i'm going for.

Re: My first Re-Paint

Then i hit it with the final clear coat

Just look at the grain, Sweet!

Overall i'm extremely proud of the finished results and cant wait to finish polishing it and build it up. I'm getting a set of EMG 85's to drop in it too so it's gonna scream!

Re: My first Re-Paint

This looks AMAZING!!
How did you get it to go on smooth? I have tried painting before and I always seem to get an orange peel texture.

Re: My first Re-Paint

thanks for the comments, it's made me fall in love with the warlock all over again seeing it in fresh paint

the trick to the finish is dont use cans! i used my Devilbiss GTI spray guns which i use for refinishing cars, not that it can't be done nicely with cans- if you do use cans, a warm environment is key and before spraying cans warm them up in some hot water to really let the paint flow and dont let it dry fully between coats. let the first coat 'flash off' so its still slightly tacky then hit it again with a full wet coat and it will flow in to your first coat. let that dry fully, flat out any bits of **** then do it again. the more coats of clear you put on the deeper the gloss and depth of finish you'll get and you can achieve just as good results than with a gun/compressor set up.

All thats left to do is polish it then i can build it up and get more pics up of the final finished product should be done tomorrow night so pics will be up wednesday hopefully

I hope this has been of some help to people and if anyone needs more in-depth info feel free to ask!
