Neck back sanding

Hello all!

I read the neck back sanding page on this site, and have searching about it before as well, now I'm building my own "wannabe" amateure jem style neck.. maple / maple" .. and I am just about to get to the phase where I have to decide what to do with it "finishing" ..

Will it really be ok to leave it unfinished ?? will it not be vulnerable to moist and such ??

I'm confused about this issue ... can someone clear it for me please ..?

thinking about moisture from my hands and such ...

thanks for taking the time to read through this post
have a good one

Re: Neck back sanding

Leaving the neck "raw" is asking for problems, so at least finish the neck with either Tung Oil or Tru Oil (gunstock oil). One of those should be available in Sweden.

leaving ti bare may be okay but can lead to issues

ive seen more than one bare neck thats lasted over ten years....and ive also seen one bare that was destroyed in a year

tung oil it if u like the bare feel, and for the fretboard u can also tun oil it, or like a poly finish would seal it better, youll probably eat away the tung oil faster and ur fretboard will show it and the poly finish will be more durable.....maybe someone else has a better sugestion for the fretboard

Re: Neck back sanding

Ken,

I use Tru Oil to finish my necks and that includes the fret board (maple of course). Rosewood or ebony just need conditioning and can be left unfinished.
