Neck things.........

Well hello boys. I got some questions. I cleaned my fretboard and put some oil on it. So far so good. Now my questions is. (I got a Jem7 BSB) What about the rest of the neck. The neck is unfinished (or i this stain to see as a finish?) I asked myself what could i do for my neck? Any tips? Like wax or something? Or is it just not necessary to worry about that? Throw in ur opinions, please. Every two cents are woth it. Thx in forward.

I'm not that familiar with the BSB, but if it's unfinished, just clean it off
and LEAVE IT.

IMHO unfinished necks are the smoothest and fastest. Just keep it clean
and it will treat you well.

well said Raven,
just remember to wash your hands before playing, and try to keep your neck by soaking your hands sweat, if you can.

Not crazy! It's the best thing you can do for your guitar!

I've seen guys have guitars that they play an hour a day every day, and
you wouldn't be able to tell it!

It's all because they wash their hands before every practice session, and
wipe the whole guitar down afterwards!

MAJOR pain in the ass wiping down my UV777BK. It shows streaks so
easily. But the awsome Jemsite dude that sold it to me kept it in such
wonderfull condition, it would be a crime for me not to keep it as such!

The guys at one of the wolfgang forums suggest using rubbing alcohol to clean raw necks. I tried this on one of my old rgs and it worked like a charm. It gave me that feel I wanted. I must add that I always coat with lemon oil, let the neck sit for half an hour or so, and then dry to let the oil soak into my raw finished necks. Seems to help the playing quality. I must add Im not sure what rubbing alcohol is gonna do to your bsb neck so I wouldnt suggest trying that unless you can do it somewhere inconspicuous

I think rubbing alcohol on an unfinished or oiled neck is a bad idea, no matter what. That will dry out the wood. Just use a dry rag after playing and a light rub with some extra-fine steel wool to remove any gunk. Then apply some lemon oil or a touch-up of tung oil a few times a year.

Drying the neck is actually kind of the idea darren and its been heavily practiced by several people on the wolfgang forums. I always coat the necks with oil after I do this. It does dry it out. But it leaves the smooth polished feel you get from wear. I dont EVER put alcohol on the fretboard, thats just bad mojo. I HATE the concept of using steel wool on my necks they make them feel too rough for my taste. When I strip the neck after I remove the clear, I use a wood polishing kit to polish the neck. It uses no oil just an extremely fine steel based cloth, NOT steel wool. Then i coat with lemon oil, leaving it on for around half an hour to let it soak. The rubbing alcohol does dry the neck out just a little, but it also returns the color to the neck which you cant get without sanding, and it also takes less time to do. If I have to clean the neck I usually just use lemon oil, until the neck starts to turn dark dark brown, and Ill clean it with some alcohol. I promise you my necks dont feel dry at all. I guess its a matter of taste in the end though

Endust with no wax! Use it on my unfinished VBK neck, and the Wolfgang Special I used to have.

Tung oil. The stain is going to rub of with playing on the BSB, but that just looks cool

I don't really oil mine that much, seems to be fine without it. Should get some tung oil and try that though

Yeah, I heard the finish rubs off the BSB... Don't put anything on it. Rubbing alcohol would be very bad.

It's oil from a tung tree.

All jokes aside it used to be called Chinawood Oil and now it's called Tung Oil.
You can probably get it at your local DIY Store anywhere in the world and it's prime property is that it penetrates deep into the wood and it is excelent at keeping moisture at bay.
It basicaly makes anything coated in it waterproof.

Now don't go and coat your whole guitar so you can play it in the bath!!!

Wood varnish/coating products based on tung oil are very popular for wood finishing today.

Cheers
