Need source for KILLER FIGURED Veneer

Looking for a quality source for some Killer veneer...something that I can preview before I purchase. I have checked all the sources on Brian's site and some look ok, but I can't get any response when I inquire as to specific thicknesses and photos of veneer. Most of the example of flame maple that I find are not that great.

Anybody have some laying around that I can buy, preferrable a great flame maple or possibly some lacewood???

Whatever you do, don't get the paper backing type of veneer.

I have access to some of Gibson's "rejects". They were rejected for various things such as a specific marking in the wrong place. They are not bookmatched, though. They are sheets large enough to easily do a body and matching headstock. They are nice flamed maple sheets. They are also thin enough to bend to the forearm contour.

Other veneers are tough to get unless you find a piece of wood you like and have a source that can cut it for you. I have only found one place locally that can do it.

What is the maximum thickness that will allow for "bending" over the contour?

Maximum thickness is when it snaps

Honestly, I don't know. You only need it fo a finish, so I don't think you want to go too thick

The reason I ask is that I found some acoustic guitar backs that are bookmatched flamed maple that look really nice. Size is right, but they are .140 inches thick which is just a hare bigger than 1/8". I may go ahead and get it, and use heat and steam to prebend prior to gluing it down just to be safe. I feel pretty certain that is what Ibanez has to do with their 4mm tops. .14 inches equals 3.55 mm.

Found a neat site for those craving nice looking wood...I'll be ordering something from them shortly, probably a flamed bookmatched set for an acoustic back (there's comes in at 5mm or so) and then I'll have to steam bend it over the arm contour.

Hoshino has a large and fairly expensive vacumn forming machine to wrap the top around the contour.

I thought they used sand bags?

The maple I get is about .06 thick. Beautiful flame on some of them, much like the JPM90. I only need it for the surface. If I went thicker, I would laminate a thick top like the PGM10TH, thick enough for the forearm contour

Might find some stuff here, worth checking each page:-

Gotta' be careful to check the sizes though as they vary a lot.

The good thing is you get to see the piece you're buying.

As it goes 21 has some nice quilts.
