New BRIDGE!!

Ive got my ol 87 RG550, and its time to mod her up a bit. Im planning on switchin necks (I hate maple fbs!...im talkin to ayron now about a trade. if anyone has experience with him, trading/buying/selling wise, some feedback would be nice...) and then after that its time for new pickups and bridge. Im still deciding about pickups...definitly Dimarzio though!
But this post is about a bridge. Im not a huge ibanez buff like you guys, though I LOVE ibanez, I dont know every single little appointment for every single model. Im not sure what bridge is on it, but whatever came on the 87-89 era, its got that. Edge maybe? No idea. But Im wondering if I could put an edge pro on there, and where I could buy one. Thanks in advance for the help dudes!

Re: New BRIDGE!!

I could be wrong, but I think that should be the original EDGE. Why do you want to change it? (Many people think that is the best of the trems.) Do you not like the high profile? If so, the Lo Pro Edge is probably your best option. An Edge Pro could be made to work too, but might take some tweaking in the route corners. Just depends on what you are looking for.

You can order through an Ibanez dealer, or ibanezrules, or the 'auction site' among other sources ...

You have to have the pics uploaded somewhere like photobucket.com or imageshack.com. Then to post the pics here, it goes like so:

Re: New BRIDGE!!

If the bridge is too high, undo the small allen screws hidden inside the posts and then crank down the posts with a bigger allen wrench. If you just change the bridge, it will still sit at the same height. Make sure you neck is straight & check for fret wear. If you have a lot of buzz after lowering the trem & the neck is straight(look down edge of fretboard from headstock), then you need a fret level or new frets. With a fret level, all frets will be even and you can crank the bridge down to very low action. IMHO a high bridge is NO reason to change to an edge pro since it will still be high. Oh yeah, also check to make sure your bridge is straight. if you are holding your guitar in your lap and you look down at the bridge, on the side of it by the post, you will see a retangle cut out and a metal piece inside. That piece needs to be straight and level with the top of the guitar. The actual top of the edge tremolo(if you do have an edge) will angle up towards the back of the guitar. Go to www.jemsite.com and click on the tech page. It will teach you all about how to set up a guitar and get it in tune properly and get the bridge to float right.
Good luck!

Re: New BRIDGE!!

King, I think he's talking about the height of the back of the trem rather than the action? I could be wrong but that's my assumption.

If I'm right, then what he needs is a Lo-Pro Edge. Personally, I don't think it's worth changing, though The original Edge feels just as good as the Lo-Pro, plus IMO it's easier to work on when changing strings and doing general maintenance stuff (easier to get under the back of it when it's cranked forwards/wedged). Of course, I'm probably completely wrong and he does mean the action height! If so, King is right. Just needs to be set up properly and you got yourself the baddest trem on the block!

Haha. Yeah, Im talking about the fine tuners and all that. And I really REALLY want some gold hardware...this black is just waaay too bleak. I hate to change something like a bridge cuz of that (and also I love the feel of the lo-pro) but its really bothering me. Im trying to get my 550 to look like Vai's natural original bad horsie...not cuz I wanna be him, but because thats the most beautiful guitar Ive ever seen. Im stripping the paint soon, trading necks with aryton (probly), and gettin new pickusp and everything. And gold hardware!! Ooo...its gonna be sexay. Ill try and get some pics up when its finished, but for now, heres the bridge:

You can see in the pic, theres some oxidation too...this project is just a full blown restoration of my ol axe. The pickups blow (V1s woo!) and I hate maple fretboards and I dont like black hardware...I mean its my opportunity to make a badass axe to my specs. So...which one is this?

Re: New BRIDGE!!

You have the original Edge trem, same as mine. I would like to get my hands on gold as well, but short of buying a new one, chances are slim.
