Re: New Chrome Painted Ibanez

I def want to see how that body turns out once it's finished. I have a question though. Forgive me in advance for asking as I know nothing about painting with an air gun. Do you buff that finish before applying the clear? or are you just going to apply the clear on top of the chrome as is?

Thanks

Jimmy

I'm going to be starting it at $399 probably for just the chrome painted body. I'm currently doing a Alder JEM body in chrome, and it will be $564 total, $165 for the body and $399 for the chrome paint. This stuff is very expensive to make. I wish I could offer it for cheaper, but unless the price of materials come down, which I doubt will, I just can't afford to do it for any less.

One question, you said the paint was soft, does that mean that you cant wet flat any runs that you might get ?

and just how glassy smooth did that primer have to be ?

cant wait to see it cleared mate !

P.S - how much for a JEM body ? PM me with cost !
Once the chrome is painted it cannot be touched by anything, so it has to be flawless before clear coating it. If you get a run, which iy would be very easy to do b/c it is very thin, you would have to wipe all the chrome paint off and re-do it. It cannot be touched by anything, otherwise it will scratch it, thats why it has to have a clear coat on it to protect it and make it a hard finish. It has to be flawlessly smooth before applying the chrome paint b/c the Chrome paint is so thin it won't smoothen anything out or fill anything in. Any imperfection will be magnified in the chrome. JEM bodys painted in Chrome are $564 in alder or basswood.

I apply the clear on top of the chrome as is, this is how it came out of the gun. If you can't spray slick then the chrome won't look slick. If you spray Orange Peel then the chrome will look orange peely, etc. So it has to be sprayed on perfect and very very smooth b/c you can't touch it until its cleared cause it will scratch very easily, thats why you put a clear coat on it, for protection.

Re: New Chrome Painted Ibanez

Got some better pics today of the chrome guitar for you guys to check out. Glad everybody seems to like it, I will definitely be doing lots more of these, and some with crazy paint jobs over the chrome background as well.

Re: New Chrome Painted Ibanez

Thanks! You should be able to tell by those pictures too that the monkey grip is not too big, especially in the 1st and 2nd pictures, the old pics were just from a different perspective and made in look bigger than it should be.

Question

Re: New Chrome Painted Ibanez

One question:

Won't this finish after time chip, crackle or bubble, like most chrome guitars do (in the end)?

why would it? Its not real chrome, its paint just like any other guitar with a hard clear over it.

Re: New Chrome Painted Ibanez

wow, thats really really awesome mate !!!

thanks for answering my questions... Im not confident that I would spray that paint well enough
I reckon I would end up wiping off $$$$ worth of paint.. I leave to you sir.. the pro !

just beautiful... I was going to try it with mirra chrome but it got a pretty bad writeup from Jeremy at LGM so I think I will stick with silver
