New Chrome Painted Ibanez

Heres some pictures of a Chrome RG I did tonight.........haven't had a chance to clear it yet but when I do I'll mock it up and post some more pics. Probably going to put all chrome hardware, i.e tremelo, knobs, back plate, chrome dimarzios, tuners, and a chrome vine.

Re: New Chrome Painted Ibanez

WOw I didn't know chrome paint could produce such a good effect. I've used chrome paints before, but I can't get it nearly as good as chromium plating.
What did u use and how did u do it? nice job btw.

Re: New Chrome Painted Ibanez

I use a custom blend of Alklad with a Sata Jet RP with a 1.2 mm tip, with the needle set open at around 10%-15% Its VERY hard to spray and get it this smooth....very very hard. Probably one of the most difficult and un-userfriendly products I've ever used or seen.

No actually it only has 2 coats, this stuff is VERY thin and has to go on very lightly to get the chrome effect. If you put it on heavy it will turn dull silver. It takes a very light trigger pull and medium to fast passes.

Wow, very good job. Steady hands. You gonna put mirror guard or pup rings like the JS10th?

Re: New Chrome Painted Ibanez

Probably do a clear pickguard. A mirror pickgiard would look a little different than the paint and would probably contrast so I'll probably just stick with a clear one. Or I dunno, I may do chrome pickup rings, haven't really decided for sure, I really painted the body to sell tho.

Re: New Chrome Painted Ibanez

I used alclad on my RC bodys back in the day there chrome is the best. But like SCS said its not user friendly at all.. And I had plenty of dull silver truck bodies LOL..

Is that a chibanez route? that grip looks huge.

Re: New Chrome Painted Ibanez

No it is not a Chibanez Route. I routed it and it is exactly the same size as my 89 Ibanez JEM VSK. I think its just the way the picture looks, each hole is the correct size and the width, length and height are dead on down. Its also the exact same size as all the Christopher Woods bodies I have that he routed the monkey grips in. But it does look kinda big in the picture but its not, I wouldn't waste the paint on a Chibanez and I wouldn't paint a guitar with paint as expensive as this if it had a monkey grip that was too big.

Re: New Chrome Painted Ibanez

Don't really want to reveal brand names, b/c I don't think anyone else has figured out how to make it work this good. Even if I told you the brand name you would not get these results unless you had a gun with a 1.2 mm tip or smaller, preferably a Sata Jet, 10%-15% open fulid tip, perfect 6-8 inch distance, 75% overlap, and a VERY trained hand, light trigger finger and can do all this and move fast at the same time.

Yes, the body has to be absolutely flawless, the smallest little flaw, sand scratch, wave, etc....will be maginified x10 when you get the chrome on, so another key element to getting a chrome paint that looks this close to chrome is getting the body flawless and flat like a mirror so there are no waves, distortions, scratches, orange peel, etc. The prepping to do the chrome paint has to be done practically under a magnifying glass if you want it to turn out this smooth. Its much harder to do perfect and smooth than any other paint job I've ever done.
