New Ideas and Questions

I was just thinking (actually, I'm very bored) about a few things and this is what I came up with:

1) *Does the type of guitar you have or anything on the guitar affect the bending or vibrato of strings? *Because I find vibrato is extremely difficult to get to sound good on my guitar and bending on my high e is next to impossible without stretching the string all the way across the board.

2) *What about a guitar with as many single coils as you can fit crammed between the neck and bridge, each with it's own on/off switch, that was you could choose as many pickups in whichever positions you want. *Y'know, that way you can create the sound of a hum or single anywhere between the neck and bridge. *That way you can zero in on the perfect sound. *

Maybe I'm nuts :loco:, or maybe I'm just insanely bored :rotfl:, or a combination. *Any replies are welcome.

Two hands - that sound like alot of work but if you could mod a guiatr like that, I bet there would be plenty of us stringbenders wanting to play this creaton. I like your idea, even if it isn't "economical". It would be a trip. As for the string bending thing, move up higher from .008 to .009 or whatever - *just up one step. Be careful to make sure the trem is set up parallel to the body. The instructions that came with your guitar should help with that.

DUH _ I forgot to mention as well - The scale of your guitar is most important to the feel (tension, bending qualities). Gibson guitars I know are on a totally different scale than , let say, the Strat. That is why the same gauge strings may play awesome on one guitar and on another it may feel like subway tracks, and on yet another, may feel like a slinky.

I have a guitar that is like that. I made it about 9 years ago. I have a G&L in the neck, a Fender vintage next, a Duncan classic stack in the middle, then a Chandler "hot rails", then a full sized Duncan full shred. I love it. It sounds great and there are tons of sounds that you can't get anywhere. I have coil taps on the back three pickups, and I just love it. The reason you wouldn't just use single coils all the way across is that just having two singles on does not make a humbucker. A humbucker is wired in series and the coils are wound for that sound, rather than to opperate by themselves. It doesn't mean they sound bad as singles, but they aren't wound the same as a strat pickup. They generally share a bar magnet with the other coil, while a single usually has magnetic pole pieces. *

Why dont you just load 3 humbuckers? They would fit perfectly across the whole space (on a 24.75 scale, 22 fret guitar). i know this because that lead singer from kittie has her flying V with that setup. im sure you could wire mad switches or push/pull pots so that any of the coils could be chosen and combined.

i also know of the "triple-coil" pickups although im not sure if their humbucking since you'd need a 4th reversed coil to cancel out any 60-cycle hum. or maybe im wrong but thats what i would think...

How about a 6 coil, fully tapable pickup? Could it happen?

Look for two "Motherbuckers". *They're three-space humbuckers made by Mity-Mite years ago. *I'm not sure if they're still available.*

I had one in the first guitar I built ages ago. *Great sound...lots of variations.

The EB "Mr Horsepower" had 4 humbuckers between neck and bridge, but that was just a one off design for spinal tap.

Thanks for the advice on the bending thing, but I'm already using Fender Bullet 10s. *As for setting the trem, I have a Squire Strat and the damn guitar shop hammered the trem down flat before I got it!

There are a lot of factors that influence string bending. *If you don't want to have to bend the string as far to get a certain pitch, then you need to increase the string tension. *This can be done by adding more springs to your tremelo. *Also, it helps if the springs are newer as they make for a stiffer feel. *How old are the springs on your guitar....? *I'd love to trade for them.
