Question

Nut Grinding or Neck Grinding?

My appologies if the has been covered before. I did a topic search but came up empty.
I have a brand new, never been used, Top Lok III Nut that I'd like to install on an old RG neck. The original is a piece of crap TRS II nut. Problem is, the new nut makes the strings sit way too high off the fretboard at the low frets.

Is it a better idea to grind down the nut or to cut out the neck?
I'd imagine it's better to grind the nut 'cause it's probably alot cheaper to buy a new nut (if it gets damaged) than it is to buy a new neck.
What do y'all think?

Re: Nut Grinding or Neck Grinding?

I used to take it off the neck but I stopped for 3 reasons.

1. It's allot of work and I'm lazy
2. It's takes about an hour where grinding only takes 10 minites.
3. Taking wood out of that area of an already very thin neck just didn't seem like such a great idea considerring how much stress is exerted on that area.

Be prepared to screw the nut up though

Definitely take it off the nut. I use a bench mounted disc sander with an 80 grit disc and that takes it down real quick and easy.
I'm with Rich in that it weakens the neck if you take too much off. Even if you take too much off the nut you can shim it back up easily.

I've been meaning to do one, although I'd recomend against it. Near guaranteed you'll fry at least one before you get it right [hmmm, probably a boost for nut sales though! ]

Re: Nut Grinding or Neck Grinding?

oh ****!
thanks for the replies guys!
I remember Rich's "triple decker nut grind" on my 7vwh lol
I was thinking that was the be the best way to do it for fear of taking too much wood off of the neck.
