Old style RG neck with overhang question.

I have a 1991 RG570, and it seems as if that overhang for the last 2/3 frets has warped and those frets are now higher, which causes some serious fretting out.
Anyone experience this, and is taking down those frets my only option?
Thanks.

Re: Old style RG neck with overhang question.

Besides a refret and leveling of the board, taking those frets down is probably your only option. It does occur to me that a temporary solution might be to drill through your 24th fret inlays, and put in two small screws (countersunk flush) custom tightening them so as to pull the fretboard extension down toward the body. There's obviously enough relief in the body to accomodate the extension. You shouldn't crack anything because the wood moved on it's own from "point zero" when it was manufactured, so you are just moving it back, not over-bending it. See if you can fret a note, while holding the board extension down, and if there's enough play in there to easily do it. Later on down the road, when it's refret time, just replace the inlays.

That depends on how much the frets have raised. Could you give me an estimate in mm's? Dan erlewine suggest two things, a all around fret level, but this isnt the best fix, removing said frets and levelling the fretboard, although it might be possible to take the neck off and put it in a jig and get this spot to lay flat again, chances are its coming loose from some part of the fretboard. My personal suggestion is to level those frets and give the last 4 a good scallop to help with those dead notes.

Re: Old style RG neck with overhang question.

hey frank. have you done this before??????? that idea did occur to me, but i didn't like the thought of drilling into the neck. but what the heck? what have i got to lose? the frets are in excellent condition for a 1991 guitar. not much wear at all and tons of meat left.
it's less than a mm. i'm not up on the metric system, but i'd say i see about a .015" raise in the last fret.
thanks!
