I used to gague the pull-up on my RG550 by pulling up on the G- string 5th fret harmonic. It went up a major 3rd when the bridge 'hit bottom'.

I think the Jem pulled up about a 4th because of the extra routing.

Re: perfect set up

The amount of pull up is only restricted by how much neck angle or how low the action is. You can set them up so the strings fret out on the frets.

I read somewhere in one of the old Ibanez catalogs that one should be able to pull up to a 5th.

Thanks for the reply, I was under the impression that it was "whole steps"
and not half steps. when it looks like I'm in the ball game I'm getting from an
E all the way to an A#. As all ways am very impressed with all the imformated

Re: perfect set up

A fifth isn't five whole steps or five half steps, a fifth is the fifth tone of the scale/mode you are playing.

When Ibanez says you should be able to pull up a "perfect" fifth, they are referring to a fifth in a major scale (1,2,3,b4,5,6,7)

So a perfect fifth is actually 3 and a half steps, or 7 frets, and they are usually referring to the G string when making this statement.

So you should be able to pull your G string to D based on what Ibanez considers a factory setup. (remember, the note you're starting on is considered the "one")

Most people are happy with a perfect fourth pullup on the G string though, as when using low action (about 2mm at the 24th fret) you'll usually have some fretting out when you pull up higher than a fourth. By the way, a fourth would be the fifth fret, or C if you're using the G string as your point of reference.

Re: perfect set up

Let me correct something . . .

Major scale that I posted isn't quite correct . . . I was thinking of the tones between notes.

1,2,3,4,5,6,7 would be this, if 1 is a whole step and b1 is a half . . .

1,1,1,b1,1,1,1,b1 (this is the octave)

Or, to do it the long way,
Starting at 1, whole step to 2, whole step to 3, half step to 4, whole step to 5, whole step to 6, whole step to 7, half step to 8(actually, back to the 1).

Personally, I'm shocked to discover how many people (that play) don't know these basics of music theory . . . I was talking to a guy at school the other day and he didn't even have any concept of how time is broken down, and he claims he's been playing guitar for 6 years already. (Just for the record, I'm in school for my degree in electronics, I've been playing for 19 years now.)
