Pick-up wax???

Hey, I just opened one of the stock pick-ups in my Epiphone and it was full of some weird wax which packs it into a single block making it look very much like a bar of soap. I asked a friend of mine who should know about this and he told me to remove it to "improve" the sound. NOw, I don't want to do anything stupid so I'd like to know what this thing really is and what it does to the pick-up and sound.

THx for any sugestions.

All pickups are "potted" in wax to keep the winds from vibrating, which would cause uncontrollable feedback, make sure to let him know

It is called "potting". The wax around the pick-up coils keeps them from vibrating, and causing gobs of feedback. Removing the wax would be a big no-no, I believe. EVH used to wind and pot his in sex wax back in the day.

Thank god. I've always been under the impression that my friend pretends to understand more than he actually does.

Thanks for the advice guys.
