pickup mounting with the clear pickguards...

like the floralprint JEM where the pickup spaces of the pickgaurd lie flush with the pickup routing on the body..the pickup screw isnt on top of the pickguard and squeezing the spring between the humbucker mounts

how exactly is it stable?

ok this is what i mean

yea i know its a crap picture but lol its late......

Re: pickup mounting with the clear pickguards...

Some pickups do mount right to the wood of the guitar. Some companies believe that this method will add sustain and give it a woodier sound. As far as stablility goes..............the pickup is usually routed into the wood which helps it stay put. This mounting method will limit the amount of adjustment from factory. You can always change springs and screws to get it where you need it. Just make sure you fill the holes with toothpicks or wood splinters when changing screws. This way they will always be stable. Hope that helps.

hm ok...is there some sort of post that would go into the wood - then the screw would go into that post ..cuz iirc pickupscrews have close threads.and after time wouldnt the threads in the wood just get rubbed off(regardless of filling the holes with wood splinters)?

Re: pickup mounting with the clear pickguards...

Don't worry about the threads. If they ever (they usually don't) get stripped out, forget the toothpicks and just put a small dab of the thin superglue in there. It will soak into the wood fibers, and also thicken up the walls of the screwhole. It's practically like turning the wood into a hard phenolic resin around that area. I've never had a pickup screwhole strip out, unless I was using a slightly thicker screw and replaced it with a slimmer one.

Re: pickup mounting with the clear pickguards...

Hamer used to mount pickups directly into the wood on some guitars, and they used to use a type of post mounted into the wood, just like your tremolo posts, only smaller. It was a small brass post. Very good idea, but I guess if you wanted the most direct contact with the pickup/wood, screwed right into the wood is the way to go, ala EVH.
Anyway, I don't think you would be doing a lot of unscrewing of the pickups, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I do this mod myself and do prefer it on most of my guitars. Although on my rg520 right now my duncan dimebucker has a plastic bottom and I just cant see getting any benefit out of this with nothing to transfer vibrations to.
