Pickups for an RG550

hey people, waiting for my Ibanez RG550 to come and im thinking about new pickups for it. What combination of dimarzios do you think would be good for Shred/Rock. Kinda after the steve vai tone but without sounding like a clone of him. Basicaly the sound of the 80's Glam/Power metal really. Oh yea, any idea what colour combonation i could get? its a DY so was thinking perhaps yellow toped or maybe green? what do you guys think?

Yep, I would go for either PAFs or Super Distortion.

One wee tip to remember is that in the '80s many guitarists of the genre had heavily processed sounds, what with it being the era of the rack system. You might want to add some effects... chorus, digital delay and maybe even a tad of reverb might help a bit

lucky you!

ive only got a crappy zoom g2.1u that is in dire need of replacement.. same with my amp as well. God, this is gonna cost me alot to get everything the way i want!

was thinking of the Evo 2's... not as OMG!!! as the origianls but still have a huge punch. Dont really want Breeds since ive heard they make your guitar into a LP. Not good since i already got one!

Re: Pickups for an RG550

I'm all for the Tone Zone in the Bridge.
I'm actually content with my V2 in the neck slot, it's well matched to the TZ and it was just the stock Pup.

I'm also a fan of the Duncan TB-12 Screamin' Demon in the bridge slot.

I guess it really depends on your needs. Either will do 80's -90's stuff with ease.

My personal opinion when using a new pickup, start your patches and or amp settings from scratch. Start clean and work your way up, it gives you the best out come overall. (IMO)

I've found that with my TZ and or evos on my Triaxis that the gain settings seldom need to be above 6.5 for TONS of sustain.

Re: Pickups for an RG550

PAF Pro is PLENTY of power in the bridge. In my opinion, having a lower output pickup with a higher-gain amp yields the best results.
