Possible repaint project... require some help

Hello fellow Jemsite-ers, this has been on my mind for a while now but it's only now I am beginning to seriously consider it.

Love my RG2550, brilliant guitar (as I keep saying all the time around here), but having had it for 3 years I fancy a change in the paint scheme. Yes, it's Galaxy Black, but it's a little... dull. You see, I've got a thing for neon colours. I suppose it's always been a dream to own an LNG JEM, but it'll never happen! Way too expensive, and what's more way too rare. So I've always fancied repainting my RG in my favourite colour: neon flourescent green!

Have never attempted a repaint before, however have been reading about it on the web in various places including here on Jemsite, so I reckon I could do it. Will practice on some scrap wood first though. However a few questions holding me back...!

Firstly, what sort of paint to use? Lots of people use car paint but there aren't too many LNG-esque cars going about... heh heh! So anyone know if there's any sort of flourescent green spraypaint out there and where I'd get it (would appreciate some input especially from UK folks).

Secondly, where can I get the lacquer from? Like I say I've never tried this before. I like a challenge though and am pretty handy with guitars, a pretty practical person so I'll give it a shot as long as I know what stuff to use and where to get it.

Anyway, that's all so I'd appreciate any other advice or general tips from anyone who's attempted this sort of thing before. Cheers!

If you go to a craft store in your area, look for createx air brush paint. They have a flourescent green which is very close to the lochness green.

Refinishing a guitar is alot of work to do and takes time to make it come out nice. Im in the middle of repainting my 89 rg 550 and the hardest part was taking the original paint off the guitar. I used a chemical stripper that i bought at home depot and had to apply several coats of it to get about 90% of the paint off. I had to sand off the rest with 220 grit paper. Remember to go with the grain of the wood when sanding. Also, you going to have to fill in the chips or imperfections with some sort of spot putty or filler to have a smooth finish. Paint work is all about preperation. Spraying the paint is the easy part. So if you take your time with your sanding and filling, it will come out nice.

Dont use acrylic ( Plasticote etc ).It never sets and reacts with life.
Splash out on some nitro and sand like a demon with velvet gloves between coats.

I plan on repainting an old guitar of mine as well. The one thing that worries me is removing the electronics (I'll be putting new ones in anyways) but still, I don't want to damage any wood when I remove the pots and whatnot.

Re: Possible repaint project... require some help

I too have wanted to repaint my guitar. I found the initial idea easy, ie, getting the paint off and putting paint on. As some kind of stripper and sand paper will take it all off relatively easily, and at a shop near me they sell spray cans of car paint which i think would be good to use on a guitar (please correct me if im wrong).

My issue is with painting details. Rather than painting it a solid colour i want to put details on it and the kind i want to do is moderatly intricate. Im not sure how id go about painting this on well. I imagine sitting there with a paintbrush wont give very good results.
