pots and capacitor: explanation?

hello,

I posted a question on the clapton mid boost + tbx mod in a different thread.
a jemsite user replied that I could also use a 2k vol pot and a 500k tone pot with a 0.44uf capacitor.

does anyone know a website where this is explained?

I mean: what difference between a 500k and a 2k pot? why a .44 capacitor and not a different value? what overall effect on the sound?...

in short: how do these elements affect the sound of the instrument?

thanks

Re: pots and capacitor: explanation?

dan torres explained this to me when i was making my own pickups and doing some experimenting

the dynamics of a pickup are restrictive to the components and thier values

example 1

10k pickup with 500k volume and 250k tone with .022 cap

at all pots all the way, the resistance values actually bring the pickup to about 7k rating

example 2

10k pickup with 1 meg volume and 500k tone with .022 cap

same instance the pickup now is runing at about 8.5(ish) realisticaly

example 3

10k pickup with 2 meg volume and 1 meg tone .022 cap

same instance your running 9.5 realisticaly

some pots you can get from torres, they are putting into gibsons with a pagebucking setup with two 14.5k rated pickiups with 4 1 meg pots, and some times for coil tapping they have 1 meg push pull

anyways

as does the increased pot value making the tone, responce, dynamics, brightness, signal intensity, etc...as it increases that, you can also bring down some dynamics, like for instance, my buddy has a single humbucker ibanez he swears by, it was a invader in the bridge position, 2 meg volume 1 meg tone with a .044

but me, i like using a x2n wich is slightly hotter than a invader and i use a 1 meg volume 500k tone and .022 cap, but i only roll off about 1/5 my highs and he doesnt roll any off, he turns it about 1/100 before the end, and this way, the more untense roll off of .044 rather the lower ramp of a .022 give him just the dynamics he wants

theres alot to it, but a hot rails, with a high volume pot, with almost any tone value, usually 500k or lower is good.....

if i was to compare the tone for my recomendation for you

it would be

hot rails humbucker
with standard...
500k volume and 250k tone
youll get x amount of operation

if u bump it to 2 meg volume and 1 meg tone you will get
for 1 meg volume x will be like almost twice as hot, i mean the signal will be very bold, and everything u do like pick dynamics, and harmonic bends and just about all ur dynamics will be at the same level, sqeals qill feel more compressed and volume will be more level with the entire playing style so you dont have quieter notes and louder notes...they will all hit hard equally, but if u play quieter if will would better and cleaner too

also with the 1 meg or 500k tone you can use in this config im talking about a .044 cap will bleed off almost all the tone u can hear, i mean its a high value and youll get a more muddy tone with a 1 meg tone turned all the way down with a 2 meg volume pot, or ull get a brighter 500k tone when its turned down with a 2meg volume pot when ur using a .044 rather a .022 cap

does this help??

im not sure if u can use a 2 meg pot with the lace ec ones

but im mean just advice for ur hot rails u have now

u can give it a really good boost just with pots and wiring trix
