Problem With Frets on RG1570

When I do vibrato and keep doing it on one fret, a grit builds up and the fret becomes very ruff. In some cases when i do vibrato I can see some metal shavings come off of the frets. What the heck is wrong and how do I fix it?

Maybe some patience is called for friend. Perhaps those best qualified to answer your question have not read it yet. Even more so you might want to give it more than just three hours for those who will and can help to get on and do so.

Re: Problem With Frets on RG1570

First thing I would do is try a different brand of strings. What gauge and tuning are you using? Personally I have never seen this but I may have a lighter touch that. Maybe you can try some string cleaning product? Are your hands clean?(no offense intended there). Are the frets dull(happens to a guitar that sits a long time)? Maybe a god polishing might help. I use stainless steel plate with a slot so it exposes a fret and protects the wood while you polish the fret. I go thru several grits of sandpaper from 400-800-1200-1500-0000 steel wool and finally hit the frets with a dremel buffing wheel with a little compound so the frets are shiny and smooth as glass. Maybe you're a candidate for a fret job with stainless steel frets.

What kind of strings are you using? Possibly some sort of coating on the strings is rubbing off onto the frets. Could also just be dirt from not properly cleaning it. There could be some sort of corrosion on the frets, too.

Re: Problem With Frets on RG1570

I've never noticed any metal shavings but I do sometimes notice a bit of a gritty feel on my newer guitars. Not sure why I only feel it on the newer ones. My simple cure for this is to wipe down the neck, frets and strings after each use with an old t-shirt. It was really bothering me on my new 2570so I just polished the frets (as mentioned above) with the 0000 steel wool and then cleaned the fretboard. Problem solved.

Sometimes the problem can be eliminated by simply washing your hands before you play. Over time, dry skin and skin oils will build up on the frets and fretboard. Depending on the "toxicity" of your hands, this could also be a contributing factor.
