Project Strat repaint. F-hole or no f-hole?

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...9&id=507425671

I've basically turned this guitar into a bit of a dream. One last stage, I'm repainting it alpine white (matte again) and am considering putting silver f-holes on á la PGM using silver paint. Your thoughts?

I could also stencil and spray in matte black, if that's gonna affect any decisions

Well I'm planning on getting a custom built by ET Guitars later in the year with a Strat body and PGM f holes and control layout, so why not?

Re: Project Strat repaint. F-hole or no f-hole?

Right I am doing the f-holes for sure. This is a bit of a seperate question but I know there are some paint experts on here so thought this would be the place to ask. I'm using matt finish sprays for both the black and white. Should I clearcoat it afterwards and what would be best to do so with? Many thanks

Any chance of posting pics somewhere other than that dreadful place?

Sounds interesting...

Re: Project Strat repaint. F-hole or no f-hole?

Haha sorry. The pic is of awful quality too. It's a photo I took of it when it was all black, then edited to a very poor standard in MS paint, as I don't have photoshop. I'll put some pics up as I go through the stages. I'm putting the white on tomorrow after primer dries, then doing the f-hole on wednesday

There it is. Please excuse the photos, the light is poor in my garage where I'm doing all this. The colour is alpine white, but it doesn't show up that well. I'll probably get the f-hole on tomorrow.

Re: Project Strat repaint. F-hole or no f-hole?

Okay, there was a coloss... collos... big mess up with the f-hole stage, so I've decided to sand it down and start all over again

That extended cutaway gives unparalelled upper fret acces, even by my S-series

and that's just another photo I took for fun.

I've got a bit more to do yet, but I'm just gonna take it to school and use a belt sander, which I don't have here.
Just thought I'd update anyone who is actually interested

The F hole just doesn't look right to me. It feels tacked on and out of place. I recently saw a G&L with an F hole on the bass side and it too did not look right.

Fair does. I think I might just scrap the f-hole idea and leave it a nice clean white.

Speaking from experience (I've designed 3 different custom graphic finishes for a few of my guitars over the past few year), go with your gut. If you have to ask what others think of it, then you have doubts about whether you think it looks good or not. If you have doubts, don't do it.

In the process of designer my guitars' paint schemes, I've done dozens of iterations for each of them and have found that I always go back to the version that clicked with me.

Yeah, I think I'll just keep trying for ideas and see if I come up with anything better. Thanks for the tip

BTW, a good test of any design you come up with is to pick one, don't look at it for week then come back to it and see what you think. You may like your design one and dislike the next. By letting it cure (so to speak), you'll be able to determine if it's something you can live with. Sure, you can always refinish it if you don't like it but why do that if you don't have to.
