I have an RG with H-S-H pickup config, but i'd like to put a SC in the neck position. There is no pickguard, the pu's are direct mounted. Problem is that the width of a single coil is greater than the space where the HB screws into the guitar. I really don't want to have to route the guitar to fit the SC- does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?
Humbuckers wired as singles are a poor compromise on tone.
I'd suggest a HB sized P90 - the Dimarzio bluesbucker for example or a BKP Mississippi Queen if you have the cash.
+ 0.5 I've got a HfH in one of my PGMs and it's similar to a single coil in some ways it's dissimilar in others. If you want a real single coil sound, get a real single coil.
It depends on how much wider it is, I would think. If you are willing to sacrifice the ability to raise or lower it easily, you could cut off the plastic edges where the screws go.
You may be able to get it to fit by tilting it a little bit, rather than putting it in straight as well.
Thanks for the replies- i was thinking that maybe i could route the plastic edges around the screws on the pickup just enough to make it fit. I'll have to actually get a pickup in my hands though to see how well this would actually work.
You can definitely do that. This is one of the things you have to do to get replacement pickups into a Carvin 7 string. The plastic bottomed DiMarzio pickups are the easiest to dremel in my experience.
I 've just wired and tried a pair of P-rails on a SZ520 : they sound great, IMHO, in any position (Neck,Neck+Bridge,Bridge(Parallel, series, only P90(s), only rail(s)))
