Question about Ibanez "Edge" style bridges

After reading a couple of the post in the Satriani and J-Custom areas about the different bridges.. my questions are:
Since Satch uses mostly the original Edge design, are they still manufacturing this bridge or do they have a HUGE back stockpile from which to draw upon and keep Satch in bridges for a good long while?
If there is a stock pile of old style bridges, are they available to the public/for sale? Are there plenty or parts to service and maintain these bridges?
Thanks and sorry in advance for so many questions.

Re: Question about Ibanez "Edge" style bridges

Good question. I was kinda wondering the same thing as I was watching the New Satch DVD. I was actually gettiing a little worked up seeing all of those Original Edge trems on the JS guitars. The fact that the JS signature guitar is only availible with the EdgePro is bogus if you ask me.

I recently had an oppurtunity to play a JS1000 with the Edgepro. Man, those fine tuners are a pain to adjust on the JS. I have'nt noticed that being a problem on other EdgePro equipped guitars.

There is some kind of licensing issue or a "fee" Ibanez has to pay to Floyd for those...something like that. I really never cared what the "excuse" was, I just knew they were not availible. Oh well.....

I dont like the way ibanez just tells you what to use with the trems, rather than being like FR, where they have a wide range to choose from, because some people do prefer a certain trem. Still, i dont think you should use an edge just because Satch does.

Re: Question about Ibanez "Edge" style bridges

Well it is a signature guitar and it should be equipped like the guitar the artist uses. I have edge, lopro, and ZR guitars. I like my original edge the best. I can see why Joe prefers it as well. Additionally, I wanted to say that the edge pro has egronomic issues when mated to the JS series guitars. As always, it's just my opinion. I'd like Ibanez to offer more options....

Trems
Necks
Pup config.
Finish. Please no more black.

One of my big problems with black is that is hard to maintain. It get's finger marks on it and shows scratches easily. If you go for one of the textured or matte black finishes, they get "shiney" easily, in spots, from playing.

My 2 pennies.

Re: Question about Ibanez "Edge" style bridges

Yes, you can buy EDGE trems from Ibanez dealers or other vendors (like Rich). They are made as replacement bridges. You can also buy all of the parts. You can't, however, replace your Edge Pro with an Edge without doing some routing.

S-man, I can't imagine what your ergonomic issues are with the Edge Pro in a JS. IMO, you can't get a more ergonomic package than a JS with an Edge Pro. But as you say, it's all opinion, and use whatever works for you.

Being that Joe played half of that DVD using a stock JS1000BP with an Edge Pro, that probably says something about the likelihood of original Edges ever again being available in a JS.

Re: Question about Ibanez "Edge" style bridges

Well if it did have the edge im sure there would be people saying "why doesnt it have the superior edge pro", "Its a top of the line signature model but it still has the inferior edge". I dont really believe the "its a signature" concept because its just an ibanez that looks like satchs guitar, it has to conform to ibanez rules whereas satch can do anything he likes to his actual guitar.

Re: Question about Ibanez "Edge" style bridges

Thanks for the info and answers guys! My experiences are with the original/old model and whatever is own the DBK model Jem. I'm pulling the trigger on a new 2620 Prestige and I see opinions about these bridges are all over the place. I was wondering about the replacements bridges and parts and availability in regards mostly to folks that own the older instruments and want to maintain them without having to convert to the newer style. (In case keeping them original was an issue) Nice to know they still make the bridges in case you need to replace one or want to build a new something with that bridge from the ground up.
Am I correct in understanding that most of the problems surrounding the newer version are in regards to not being able to use an intonation tool/key like the ones Stew Mac offered for the older versions of the Edge?

Re: Question about Ibanez "Edge" style bridges

Im not sure about hte user frendlyness of it but the hot topic lately has been about it not having locking studs so it doesnt stay in tune as well as the old ones, mainly its just the dip after pull up case.

Re: Question about Ibanez "Edge" style bridges

Yeah no locking studs. Egronomics-The fine tuners are hard to adjust, they are so close to the body.

I have the dvd and he played quite a few guitars. Alot of them, almost all, had the original edge.

Doesn't really matter to me a whole lot. The JS series doesn't really appeal to me, in terms of playibility anyway. The huge radius on the neck, etc. it just doesn't work for me.

Re: Question about Ibanez "Edge" style bridges

Personally, I think the JS series is the most comfortable guitar I've ever played.

Re: Question about Ibanez "Edge" style bridges

Being an RG fan, I will still say the JS is the best playing and most comfortable guitar that I have ever come across. Even people who never liked Ibanez will convert the moment they try a JS.

I don't understand the issues with the ergonomics of the Edge Pro in the JS? The Edge Pro is the most ergonomic FR so far in the market, and the way it is routed in a JS is no different from an RG or JEM. It is either the JS you tested has the bridge way too low or the angle was set wrongly hence the fine tuners being deeper into the route than it should be.

Yep, the setup sucked. Fair enough.
