Question about trem post - How tight loose?

I took my trem off last weekend to adjust the action. One thing I noticed is that after loosening the set screws, is that the trem post on one side was fairly firm and needed the tool to turn it. The other post was very loose. Not only could you turn it with your fingers, but it also has side to side play in the barrel. When the set screw is tightened down it is firmly seated. The sise to side play bothers me though. Is this normal?

Question about trem post

I've noticed it as well in a few guitars through the years. Seriously if it is realy bad enough to take the trem out of alignment then I would reset the anchor but for the most part with the tension of the springs and strings your going to be less than 1/4 cent off the mark..

I really wouldn't loose any sleep over it unless of course you like to torture your trem alot with massive dive's and wild hard pull ups. Then of course you might as well reseat the anchor now before it becomes a real problem.

Question about trem post

The anchor seems to be seated just fine. It seems as if either the trem post is too small or the anchor itself is too big.

Question about trem post

Here is a quick and stable fix for loose trem posts.

Plumber's Tape (AKA Teflon tape).

It will snug those posts up and be invisible at the same time. I use this on my trem arm socket as well and have had no problems with them loosening.

Question about trem post

Jimm,

Thanks for the Plumber's tape idea. I have a trem I'll have to try that on.

Question about trem post

Teflon tape is handy for alot of things Just be careful not to make the wrap too thick, as if you make the post too snug, you could inadvertently loosen (ie. rotate) the trem stud insert (that the stud screws into) while screwing the post in. Basswood is a soft wood... glen
