Quickie on finish over paint
Could you just apply four coats or so of
tung oil
to a body that's been painted about six coats of standard paint?

Re: Quickie on finish over paint
i think he means to replace the
clear coat
..
i guess it's possible with some finishing oils, but you only want to do it with the ones that have no tint to them as i'm pretty sure most oils can have a very slight yellow or brown tint hence why they still look great on wood
but your best bet for an easy cheap solution would be to go get some spraycan clearcoat and do it the semi-proper way

Yeah, that's what I was guessing would be an easier option, don't want the yellowish tint (explained below)
Yeah, I guess I wasn't very clear. I was going to sand down a body and start from scratch, first with wood spirits then primer coat then color coats. I was hoping to do a white coat, so I'm thinking clear coat would be better as it wouldn't tint the white

Re: Quickie on finish over paint
if you like, don't sand it all the way, just take a bit off and skip the woodspirits(i assume that's a sanding sealant) cos it'll already be sealed..
there's no need to take much of the paint off, especially if it's a floating bridge in which case no heights(like the bridge) can be altered no matter how many coats on coats..
with a
fixed bridge
- same deal but in certain cases with thick layers i guess you'd want to take extra off if you were cautious..
all you really need is to scuff sand it up for the paint..

Re: Quickie on finish over paint
Sorry about my flippant reply - I think you'd be best to follow the advice given by my countryman and do a foo foo can lacquer finish over the colour - most oils (and I am assuming Tung Oil also falls into this category) are penetrating finishes, and they aren't goint to penetrate far into several layers of coloured finish, which means they might never really dry, leaving you with a perpetually oily guitar.
The other thing to be a little careful of is clearcoat compatibility - make sure whatever you choose as a top coat is compatible with the colour under it - Kai is quite correct that the existing finish is the best undercoat going for your colour - grainfilled, smooth, flat etc - scuff sand and paint away!
