Re-painting an 89 EX-350

I was hoping for some advice from you Ibanez guys. I am working on my first Ibanez and am trying to build a guitar I can be proud of. I am using this 89 ex350 as a platform and will bolt on all the goodies. I know this body was a low budget axe, but my wife won't let me spend any more $$$ on another guitar. She thinks 7 is enough, silly girl. First off can anyone help my ID the wood? I am going to try and attach a pic to this post. Also I see there is paint where the neck bolts onto the body. Was this just sloppy workmanship or should I keep it there. I do auto restorations and will be using Catalized polyurethane because I am familiar with it. Will that be a problem on a guitar like this? Any and all comments will be welcomed.
PS I can't seem to get my files small enough to download so no pics

More than likely it was plywood. My first name guitar was an EX360 and it was garbage. I had more parts fall out of it than I care to think about.

Paint in the neck pocket is pretty common, even if not particularly desirable. It's not an issue unless thick or uneven preventing solid contact of neck and body.

Catalyzed poly will work fine; you'll be applying poly over poly.
