Recessed Floyd Post Inserts Question

I'm putting together a guitar with a recessed floyd with lion's claw, and I have a pair of locking studs & inserts that I want to use. The holes in the body for the inserts are drilled deep enough so that the insert fits almost, but not entirely, into the hole, like so:

When I screwed the posts all the way in and mocked-up the trem's position, the wings (baseplate?) of the trem were exactly level with the top of the recessed area, like so:

So I guess my question is this: for a recessed floyd, should the stud inserts be placed flush with the wood, or is my current setup with the wings parallel and level to the face of the guitar body correct?

Re: Recessed Floyd Post Inserts Question

The insert should be flush, just drill the holes a bit deeper.

Yes, you just can't go wrong!
Just measure the height of the stud insert and drill as deep as the insert.

Ibanez locking stud inserts call for an 11mm bit(available from Woodcrafters in a brad point style). You should use a drill press to maintain perfect alignment and use the stop feature on the press so you don't go too deep.

Re: Recessed Floyd Post Inserts Question

Check your depths and widths before drilling more.

If your post inserts are 30mm long (as my Gotoh inserts are), and your guitar body thickness is about 45mm, and you are routed to the OFR spec, then if the inserts are flush to the wood, they will be penetrating into the body past the top of spring cavity by more than 10mm!

Check it out (routing specs from www.floydrose.com):

http://www.floydrose.com/pdf/Floyd%2...0depths)MM.pdf

You will notice the wood thickness here above the top of the spring cavity route is 18-19mm; your post inserts are 30mm long... arithmetic never lies.

If the posts are positioned so they are not going into the spring cavity, probably no problem. (Depends how wide the spring cavity is routed.)

Measure twice, cut once is still the rule.

Edit: Given your inserts are probably already deep enough into the body that they would already be below the top of the spring cavity route if that was going to be a problem, you are probably clear to drill down an extra 5mm or so. Measuring is always still a good idea... you really don't want to come through the back accidently by drilling too deeply!

Re: Recessed Floyd Post Inserts Question

BTW, where did you get the routed body from? It looks like a nice piece of work... classy.
