refinishing my saber

i recently bought an saber 540sbc at sam ash for 100 bucks. nice deal huh?

the finish is in pretty good condition but i really don't like the color. i'm also making this my project guitar, so i'll porbably have a lot of questions later on. this is the only one for now:

what color should i refinish it in? it has chrome hardware. i was thinking a transparent red finish?

and what do you guys think of those flip switches instead of a pickup selector switch(dpdt switches i think?) mine is the one in the middle:

i think i'll taper the neck joint too. but more on that later.

thanks in advance

I'm very upset that I didn't see that saber there, because it would've been gone! I always liked those. I have one like it and I swapped the chrome for cosmo hardware to match the pic in the catalog. It was only the first year or less that those had chrome hardware. Yours probably also has the output jack tilted down, as opposed to all other sabers tilted toward the strap button. Another cool oddity. I myself love the black cherry finish. The lighter red metallic was kind of junky looking. The body could look good in trans red but having stripped several sabers before, often there is filler around the jack hole, because that was a difficult cut, which led to the plastic inserts. On a 15 year old guitar you can probably see the insert through the finish by now, to know if you have one. Mine does. So be careful around there if you decide to strip it. Some have crappy mahogany so it's a crapshoot, but if you can tell how many pieces it is through the finish you'll have a better idea if you'll have a nice trans body. Check out the early 90's S guitars, some had hardtails. There were a few that were trans red so you can get an idea of what it would look like. The old ones were thinner around the edges than new ones are. That would leave plenty of room for a nice veneer top. Or you can just sell it to me or trade me! Do you really want to be doing all that sanding anyway?!

what are you willing to trade or pay for it? its not in bad condition but it isn't great. there are a couple scratches on the back with a nick on the side. the trem towards the bass side is worn. i never had a problem with it though, i like the way it plays.

if you're looking at trading, i'll trade you for something of lesser value plus some money if you want.

We'll go outside the forum, either in a PM or E-mail for that. If you decide to keep it and refinish it, at least this thread has some decent history/suggestions for the 540 as the questions were posed. I guess it goes to show you that the time and effort of a refinish job can sometimes be avoided just by finding out that somebody else wants your guitar as it is!
