Removing cosmo black finish...

Hey there...
I've been a long time reader of the forum but have never decided to join until now. The reason that prompted me to is as I'm asking for your help... I looked at some other threads regarding this issue but came to no conclusion, as I really dislike the look of my Edge III tremolo at the moment due to the cosmo black finish wearing away on the upper half of the trem, including the saddles. Worst of it all is that the trem is only about a year and a half old, although the wear started a while back...

I bought some fine grade 0000 steel wool to abrase the finish off and reveal the normal chrome, but this has failed. I've also tried it but with various chemicals such as WD 40, Tri Flow Superior, Vinegar, Lemon Juice (possibly dangerous for the metal) but still failed.

Has anyone succeeded in doing this?

Many thanks.

I think the cosmos black is a kind of electroplating. In other words it's coated with a think layer of metal. I'd say the best way is sandpaper, but with that you can't get into the creases.

I say leave it alone. Lots of people spend money to get their guitar looking like that, aka relicing. Or you can take this as the opportunity for an upgrade.

The first thought that springs to mind is to buy a replacement in chrome.

+1 on that suggestion! They always say, "You can't polish a turd!" Understanding that, my suggestion is to replace the Cosmo Edge III with a chrome original Edge or LoPro Edge. Removing the cosmo from the Edge III will not make it any better.

I've always used fine steel wool or metal polish and got near instant results.

Cow manure, get some of that fresh preferably and rub it in by hand till the finish comes off.

Works every time.
