Sometimes those ferrules can get stuck in there pretty good. I usually just pry them out with a small flathead or some sort of pick. You have to work slowly and be careful not to damage the surrounding finish. On one particularly bad guitar I had to heat the ferrules with a soldering iron, pop them up slightly with a pick, then pull them out the rest of the way with a pair of needle nose pliers. It's easy to damage the finish on the ferrules doing something like this, so be prepared to buy new ones if you want them to look pristine.
