Re: replacing edge III trem?

The Edge III Trem is supposedly (almost) directly interchangeable with an Original Floyd Rose, so you could go for that. I'm not sure about Edge or Edge Pro, they might need extensive work.

Is the Edge III really that bad? That's the general feeling I get, but I don't really have any firsthand experience with it myself. If it's directly compatible with an OFR you could probably throw a LO TRS II in there pretty easily too.

IMO you have 3 possible solutions
1.) Have your guitar body re-routed
2.) Follow my idea on how to mod an original edge trem to fit any Ibanez.
3.) Buy a different compatible trem that you might not like.

Here's what I did with my RG350 and the Edge III. Buy an original Ibanez Edge trem from the Bay, then find someone with a grinder. Remove and unscrew the fine tuning pegs from the unit and grind them down to shorten their length. You must supply a new tapper to them so they can go back into the unit. Do Not flatten them, or they will not go back in right. The end of the peg where the Allen wrench goes to tighten or lock the string down should now fall under the "arm rest" of the trem where it says licensed under Floyd Rose. This will provide plenty of clearence for the routing on the guitar. Then, have someone grind the front edges of the trem where the knife edges reside, and on the backside of the base to allow clearence. If you don't mind a little cosmetic alterations, then this is a good mod that's easy to do. Also, if you can find someone to re-chrome the trem it will look like a stock piece. I'm planning on having it done by the end of the summer.Problem fixed!

I'll post pictures of mine when I get back to my house from this weekend of vacationing.

Re: replacing edge III trem?

everyone says the Original Floyd Rose Tremolo drops right in, but I think there are a lot of unanswered variables here

I want to replace my EGDE III
have you actually accomplished this mod?

I can't find any spec sheets on the edge 3 (tons of stuff on the OFR however)

any problem with the radius? the Xiphos is .400 with a 43mm nut
I can't find a System offered that accomodates a .400 radius
This would be a good reason to stay with the edge pro

where did the saddles end up? important for intonation

string spacing?

what guitar did you do this in?

oh yea neck angle...some of the older trems you had to compensate the neck angle

did you replace the locking nut?
I can't find a 43mm replacement on the Floyd Rose site

anchors? 10/11/12 mm what are they?

I am thinking of doing this to my Xiphos, I am a pretty handy guy and can do my own setups but if its not as easy as a swap or drilling the anchor post a little bigger, then I will have to pay a lot for the edge pro, and get the route done which almost seems not worth it to me.

I just hear too many people say an OFR drops right in, well I would like to hear from someone who KNOWS it can be done, cuase they are playing it now! not some kid who thinks he heard on u tube it can be done.
I am undecided Because I know I will keep this guitar for a while
but people are complaining about tuning instability...Well getting the wrong replacement part can open a whole new can of worms

Thanx

please pm me if you have done this so we can chat I can help you with your recording and mix problems in return

Re: replacing edge III trem?

You can always shim the saddles on your trem so it's not really that big of a deal when you look at the radius thing. Just use the locking nut that's already on the guitar too.

Re: replacing edge III trem?

i´d rather have something smoother and more tuning-stable... any brand, as long as it´s compatible and better :P

i´m thinking official floyd rose, but can anyone say any pros/cons about it?

it´s just something i´m thinking of though, i´ll rather try out other string gauges before i throw out the trem...

I have played/felt and edge3, and the original edge (which is close the the floyd rose) feels aloooot better and more solid. hardened steel which means the knife edges dont wear out as easily and the knife edges are replaceable

Re: replacing edge III trem?

ok thanks for the shimming thing i just came across that yesterday as was wondering why no one has mentioned it yet?
i am thinking of either an edge pro (needs routing )
or a schaller floyd rose has correct string spacing but is the block too long?(no routing i believe)

I have had an Edge III for, what, 2 years now, and they stay in tune just fine, so long as you know what you're doing with a trem unit. Alot of people knock them, without actually owning or playing one. They just regurgitate the crap they hear, online, and some are merely clueless about how to take care of their guitar. That's not to say he's either, just saying there's plenty of those types, out there, especailly here, it seems. Of course, there are always those cases where someone DOES get a bad piece of equipment, and that goes with anything. Is the Edge III as stout as the Edge? No. It DOES feel lighter. But does it stay in tune? Hell yeah. Not only does it stay in, but, now that I think of it, I have yet to actually break a string on it, in the 2 years I've owned it. I really doubt I got the only, magical, Edge III unit, and the ones I've played at the stores seem to confirm this, too.
The one trem I will NEVER own again, however, is the Lo-TRS II. Man, you just LOOK at the guitar, and the tuning would slip!

OK i gotta say something so far i cant knock my edge 3 outta tune i put a bit of graphite shaving on the knife edges ans its workin really nice... granted i am not doing any acrobatics with the bar For now the EDGE3 can stay if I change my mind in 6 months the tech is already ready to do it
so i will wait and see what happens also thanx to everyone for all their input
