Replacing necks

What are the problems of changing necks, ie 22 fret for a 24 - string length, scale etc, or standard thickness for a wizard- string height etc? There is nothing wrong with mine but a car accident has left my left hand with very minor loss of function and I prefer playing a thinner wizard style. The Minister of War and Finance baulked at a new RG or S series, (you are not even in a band, why do you need another guitar???) so that's why I am wondering about neck changes!

Re: Replacing necks

You can change to a thinner neck (assuming it is compatible) without problems. In some cases, you can change between numbers of frets (though in the real world, going from 22 to 24 rarely works). The thing you cannot do is to change the scale length (or have that effect by using a neck with the wrong kind of heel, thus sitting in the wrong place). If you change the scale length, the bridge will be in the wrong place and you won't be able to intonate it.

If you post exactly what you are coming from and trying to go to, we can give you a better idea if it is possible. It can always be done with a custom neck, too, if you are willing to spend a little more money.

Re: Replacing necks

Thanks for that, if I'd go to the trouble of a custom neck, I'd probably just by a new S. I was just looking for any easy fix! hahaha. It really isn't a problem, just get uncomfortable after extended playing. One of my best mates has an RG with a wizard neck and prefers mine... 22 frets vs 24...
I'll will just have to live with it! I am in remote Western Australia, so it makes it hard to "chat" with a good guitar tech! The guitar is an 88/89 basswood EX 350 H-S-H and really isn't worth "custom" parts altough it has a sweet sound! I am upgrading the PUPS - EVO in the bridge and PAF Pro inthe neck, haven't decided on a single yet (any ideas?) The TRS 101 trem has all but died... Getting blocked into a fixed position as soon as I get some time... Another reason for not $$$ on it and getting another guitar with a ZR or PRO.
Might just get a 555!!
