replacing trem posts

In a recent attempt to setup my lo-pro on the JEM7V, I managed to break off a corner of the trem post screw! Ok the guitar still plays, I just can't adjust the damn thing anymore. I'm getting replacement parts and I may need to install myself and I have a few questions in mind:

1. Are the trem posts hard to pull out? If so what's the best way to do it without damaging the body. Is there a chance they are "glued" in? (oh please no) I notice people use combination of the nail remover side of the hammer and a piece of cloth.

2. If I plan to take out the trem with the strings attatched how hard would it be to reinsert it without breaking anything. Any suggestions on this?

OK, if I am understanding your problem correctly ...

The posts (or studs) screw into the anchors (the metal sleeves pressed into the wood). Those are locking studs, so you have to loosen the small inner set screw before trying to turn the large outer stud. (perhaps why you broke the stud) The stud can be unscrewed all the way out of the anchor, and a new stud screwed into the anchor. The anchor does not need to be replaced unless damaged or loose.

The anchor will not be glued in unless it was already loose and had been repaired.

Follow the directions on Rich's site (swirl banner at the top of the page) ... remove the trem with the strings attached. Unscrew the old stud and screw in the new one. Pop the trem back on and adjust the action and tuning. You are done. Easy.

it's the outer screw that broke. I had the allen wrench inserted angled so when I pulled on it it broke off. I just need to pull out the outer stud and replace. From the diagrams it seems that you wouldn't need to unscrew the locking stud first right? :P

You should be able to unscrew the outer stud without loosening the inner screw -- however the inner screw is there to jam or "lock" the threads, so it would be easier if you are able to back off the inner screw (slightly). I am not saying you did it, but a number of people have broken studs or ripped out the anchors by trying to screw IN the studs without unlocking them first.

As you said, just back out the old stud and put the new one in.

Just loosen the set screw within the stud your removing then put a sock or some kind of 100% cotton cloth under the trem to keep it at the proper angle while you loosen the strings from the headstock tuning machines. Once that is done just pull the trem springs out (Carefully!) then the trem should just pop off with strings still attached. Make sure you support the trem so it doesn't just pop out on its own when removing the springs. Once your finish poppin in the new stud just reverse in that order. BE CAREFUL when puttin the trem springs back in, and take your time! Good luck....

Just to clarify pop the trem off first before you mess with the stud. What I like to do is rest trem on my thigh then remove the trem springs that way your leg holds the trem in place after all the springs are off
