Hey all... On a side note the forum seems to have been getting kinda dead recently..Oh well anyway, we've all gone over how to refinish guitars a billion times, but I just have a few more questions and want to run this by you guys before I do it.
Now I refinished my AX7, but I did NOT do a pro job at all. I simply roughed up the finish it already had and then spray painted (i think enamal) the body. that was IT. of course after a month already some of it is scratching off. reason why i didnt take the original finish off was because I wanted to leave the primer under the original finish on so that the paint wouldn't leak into the wood. (and i didnt feel like priming it dammit!! hehe) so anyways..Now that I plan on refinishing another guitar I also want to redo my AX7 the RIGHT way. I think I have a pretty good idea of what to do. But like I said I just want to run this by a few of you just to check I'm right.
This time around, I want to take the entire finish off. Then I spray primer, assuming the primer is compatiable with the paint im using of course, now 1st question, how many coats would be enough? 2? 3? I would guess either would be fine. Then I spray the actual paint over the primer..putting on...what, maybe 4 or 5 coats??? Then, I spray a
clear coat over everything. now heres a few more questions...Im assuming clear coat stuff does come in spray form right?? How many coats should I put on? Ive heard about letting the coats "cure", does this apply to all sprays, or just the clear coat? And how long should I do this "cure" thing??
After all that I should be ALL set right? Nice new finish?? Thanks a lot everyone for the help I love doing this stuff. just as long as i dont screw up!!
P.S-if you know a link to somewhere that answers all my questions feel free to post that instead of spending half-an-hour typing it out just for me. and also, are there any brands of any of these sprays that people recommend?? Is this enamal paint good or should I use acrylic?? I dont know what either of those are but hell if ones better then the other....
