RG470 Edge Trem conversion

Hey guys

I just won an Original Edge trem from 1987 on the 'Bay and I had a few questions for you. I'm finally replacing the trem on my 1995 RG470 with something a little better than it came with, the Edge. I'm hoping I've picked up a decent quality Edge for not too much cash.

Does this look ok, are the knife edges usable or should I look at replacing them? Also, will installing the locking studs that were originally used with the Edge make a huge difference or can I get away with the original studs used with the LO-TRS?

Thanks heaps for your help guys, now to find a whammy bar to go with it!

Re: RG470 Edge Trem conversion

I think you should try it as is and see how it goes. BUT! You will have to remove a little wood to make it fit. The RG470 trem had a different route.

damn! you're down-under. i was going to say i have a whammy bar if you were interested in purchasing it.

oh, the edge is a vast improvement over the TRS. you will love it. but i still like the type of bar that the TRS comes with as opposed to the push-in bar on the edge trem. i swap out all my whammy bars with the finger-tightening type on my edges.

Re: RG470 Edge Trem conversion

Yeah I'm aware of the fact that I'll probably have to route the cavity a little. I was planning to perhaps paint the sucker anyway. If it's as good as the Gotoh which I have used in the RG470 and now resides in my custom guitar then I'll be happy. I wonder if I could install the Gotoh trem arm holder into the edge? They are even better than both of the trem arm holders on the EDGE and LO-TRS trems.

I'll be happy with my old RG470 after I've installed the trem. I've only recently discovered that I've been playing a guitar with an original Wizard neck on it all these years. It's a Korean RG470 which should have a rounder Wizard II profile neck but it's thinner and flatter than one of those. The 470 will end up like a 570!

Can anyone else provide any more info, much appreciated if you could. I'm new to the Edge and want to make sure I'm getting the best experience from it!

Re: RG470 Edge Trem conversion

btw...i believe www.ibanezrules.com has a 'how to' on filing worn knife edges under the tech section, in case they are too worn. but i don't think they are that bad.

Re: RG470 Edge Trem conversion

Yeah I thought they were ok, my main concern was using the trem posts from the L-TRS trem, and whether I should pull the anchors and all out and replace them with the ones from Edge.

According to this page over at ProjectGuitar, it says that you need to replace the studs with the Edge versions and you might have to redrill the holes to fit the clearance needed. *shrugs*

No man... although the Gotoh trem arm is really THE best arm holder, its not going to work as well as it should on the Edge.

The Gotoh arm assembly is hexagonal in shape, on the Gotoh FR baseplate, the hole to insert the arm holder is also hexagonal. Thats why its so stable and never moves. On the Edge, its round and it might not even fit.

Say, since you got the Gotoh FR, don't you have the Trem posts that come with it? The Gotoh Trem posts are cut much better than many Edge posts.

Re: RG470 Edge Trem conversion

Thanks for your help again guys, thanks Kii for pointing me to the projectguitar.com tutorial, I had forgotten about that one.

Thanks too Shredcows for the info on the Gotoh trem arm. Unfortunately I didn't get the Gotoh trem posts as I bought the trem second hand. I might look at getting those ones if they are cut better than the edge ones.

Thanks again guys

Re: RG470 Edge Trem conversion

Gotoh is good stuff. I still have a set of chrome Gotoh saddles here with me.. if you ever need them...

Btw, the Gotoh trem posts? They are not only cut with a nice V groove, they are locking posts.

Re: RG470 Edge Trem conversion

Ah thank you for the info. I'll definitely look in to these, probably easier to get and cheaper than the Ibanez ones.

Are the chrome Gotoh saddles new? Id only I'd known about them a month ago, I was in Singapore! PM me a price if you are interested in selling them.

Re: RG470 Edge Trem conversion

Just another question, I'm looking on Ibanez Rules and not sure about something. For the trem posts, are any of these what I need?

Trem Stud-----Old Design 92'-00'--------2LE2-B--30----$10.00
Trem Stud-----Redesigned - Grooved----2LE2-B--60-----$15.00
Stud Insert-----------------------------2LE2A---29-----$10.00

I'm guessing I need the Trem Stud (x2) Old Design (I'm getting an 87 model Edge), and the stud insert (x2). Is this correct?

Also are these the proper Ibanez part numbers?

Thanks again for your help

Get the redesigned ones. Rich re-grooved them properly.

Re: RG470 Edge Trem conversion

I would like to order them through Rich, but being overseas makes my options for buying them from him very difficult. If these part numbers are the official Ibanez ones then I'll just order them through my Ibanez distributor if possible. If they can't I'll have to work out a way of getting them from Rich or check the 'Bay.

Unfortunately it looks like Gotoh don't have seperate trem posts and anchors for sale, they only come with the whole kit.

Is anybody able to confirm that these are the official Ibanez part numbers? Your help is appreciated. I need to order these today from my local store.
