root beer finish

I'm still toying around with the idea of using tung oil to finish my RG517, but I was wondering if anyone knew how I might get that Root beer Jem finish. Is it just a dark woodstain with clearcoat over it?

thanks

Re: root beer finish

I believe the RB JEMs are also burned with a torch or heat gun to enhance the grain and get the darker effects around the edges.

Re: root beer finish

Yes, the Burnt Stain Blue finish is a Root Beer rebirth of sorts. The guitar is torched first, then colored. So in the case of the RB, it's torched and then shot with a "caramel/maple syrup" tinted clearcoat. The BSB is torched then rubbed with the blue dye. But they both begin their life the same way.
