Rust removal

Are there any specific way of removing rust from hardware on a guitar, like fretboards, bolts and other metal hardware?

Re: Rust removal

Frets - 0000 (or 00000) steel wool. Mask your fretboard first.

The rest - a WD40 (or similar) bath.

Re: Rust removal

I was also wondering about this. A friend of ours has a nice older Les Paul that looks like it was dunked in the ocean or something. Everything metal has rust and even the screws are rusted. I wanted to do a complete overhaul on his axe to make it shine. Do you think I'd be better off just buying new hardware? He could use better pickups anyway so it wouldn't be too much to just strip it down and start over. I do know that once I fix it for him he WILL take care of it, or I'll repo it or something.

Re: Rust removal

Are the 0's indicating the thickness of the steelwool or something? Thanks for reply

Re: Rust removal

Yes, the 0 is a measure of how coarse the steel wool is. The more 0's, the finer(less abrasive) the product. Many people have very acidic sweat and it can ruin bridges and other metal guitar parts. I had a friend that paid big bucks for a really expensive ax and within 6 months, all the gold hardware was green with corrosion. I finally had to tell him he couldn't play my guitars anymore. Soak the parts in WD-40 and if the come out good enough to re-use, great. If not, toss them out(unless its a true vintage piece where even old hardware is worth something (sometimes I scratch my head on the percieved value of some tired old stuff). Hardware for Les Pauls is plentiful. I really like the look of nickel plated instead of chrome.
