S540LTD restore Question (Neck)

I'm currently trying to restore S540LTD (1993) . The body is about done but I wana do something with the neck . I like to sand the back of the neck to get the little dents out and give it a newer look .

My question is the white bound . I like to keep it on the neck , so if I sand the neck will the color (white) of the bound come off or is it a separate piece of the neck ??

OoOo stained finish looks good...
the binding is a separate piece of material glued to the fretboard and neck; its safe to sand the neck with the binding as long you mask it with tape.
Unfinished neck feels great when done to a certain shine and lots of elbow grease!

Ditto, the binding is solid color all the way thru so a little sanding won't change the color. But I like the suggestion of taping it off so you don't hit at all. Most of your sanding is likely to be on the back part of the neck but don't go any deeper than you need. After, I suggest tungue oil to seal and protect it. One or two coats, soak in over night and then rub it down with 0000 steel wool. Also a good time to douse the fretboard in some conditioner or linseed oil and buff that with the same steel wool. I wear rubber gloves while doing this to keep my hands clean.
