Sanding down a neck?

Hey folks...

So 2 years ago I got this MIJ '85 Squier Contemporary that was totally messed up dinks and donks everywhere and the neck was virtually unplayable. So I sanded it down (figured I couldn't break anything as it's wasted anyways so I tried to fix it that way) and ever since it's one of my main 3 axes, amazing guitar and I like the feel of the sanded neck. I use Warwick Beewax to keep it healthy and it works nice.

Now I got a JS6000 with some issues on the neck aswell and I was wondering whether the trick would work again. Only this time I'm hesitating as a JS neck alone is worth more than the whole squier incl. PUps and everything was...

Do/Don't? Any hints?

IMO, if you want to KEEP the guitar, make it as YOU want it. I've sanded new necks to the profile I want, and those cost a few hundred each. Just be cautious & go slow - and check often; you can always sand more, but you can't put it back.

+1 to Jester's comments. I've sanded lots of necks and never screwed one up yet. Take your time and you'll be fine.

Re: Sanding down a neck?

Every guitar I own (except DY) has a sanded down neck and the real trick is to stop every few passes and dust off/ check your work. Always finish off with something like a 1200 grit too just to give it that "babies bottom" feel.

Re: Sanding down a neck?

I sand all my necks down, finishing off with a 0000 steel wool, and then waxing/oiling the neck. This works amazing and gives them that nice smooth ernie ball feel. Gunstock oil works well for this. I dont actually change the profile of the neck though, rather i simply remove the clear/sealer as they feel and sound much different/better without it to me.

Re: Sanding down a neck?

yea that's what i'm aiming at, sniperfrommars1. don't wanna alter the js neck profile at all but the clearcoat or whatever they put on these guitars, is annoying. just wondered whether it would warp in a few months or so. warwick beewax should do the job to finish it, though.

thanks peeps.
