Scallop depth? Vine Inlay?

How deep should i scallop my strat-copy fretboard-I've done the top 4 frets to sbout 4mm. Is this too deep?
I'm using this neck to experiment before hacking into a new guitar and i also want to experiment with a bit of a vine inlay-does anyone know what material is used for it, and how its applied, set in the neck?

Cheers, Henry.

Generally, abalone and MOP is served in a .05" ration. So you would have about a 1.27mm depth you could successfully scallop.

I can't be 100% sure with the Ibanez vine inlays, however. I think 4mm is WAY too deep. Usually a cheaper guitar will use plastic inlay material which may be deeper - sometimes all the way through the fingerboard!

scallops and chips

Hi,

You have to be real careful when scalloping a Jem. The vine inlay is done first then scalloped and apparently Ibanez actually ruins many guitar necks before getting a good one because of the scalloping process. In my opinion scalloping does not need to be very deep at all, and can only hinder the tuning stability of the neck.

I have a jem and a malmsteen strat, and even the Yng strat does not have a 4mm scallop!! More like a 1.85 mm depth. It only needs to give a clearance for your finger tip anyway.

Let me know how you go on,

Col

Yeh,

But do remember that you can have 4mm scallops if you wish. In Dan Erwines reapir book the scallops are HUGE!!

Is this all over the neck or just the last 4 frets because I would ask yourself just how important are they??? Even Vai says that they don't really make that much difference to the jem and there are models which don't have them right?? bsb???

Yep, even the grand-daddy of them all - the JEM10.
