Scalloping - Should I scallop my UV777GR?

Just like what the topic says. I'm thinking of doing this to the last 6 frets of the guitar. I'm just worried I might damage the pyramind inlays if i scallop 'em too much. What would be an appropriate depth to scallop them? Would scalloping them do any damage to the neck? discoloration perhaps?

Thankx

Its all a matter of taste.

You will run into some discoloration on the wood which can be easily overcome....

As far as depth if you take your time and do it with patience you'll be able to see how close your getting to the bottom of the inlays and know when to quit and fine finish the grooves of the scallop.

Like anything of this nature remember that its a permanent thing so if your uncomfortble at any point bail out and hire somebody whose use to doing it.

And please stay away from power tools unless your use to handling them because this is a delicate modification....I personally do them all by hand =o)

Unless of course it's something like a dremel conture sander for the final finishing....even then take your time...

As always if you have never done it before I would recommend praticing on a junker but thats not always available.....good luck with which ever you decide...

there are dozens of threads on this topic in the archives, look em up. *also, you will not discolor the neck as long as you condition it after scalloping. *kiss the abalone goodbye, half a mm and theyre gone. *the plastic part of the inlays will last for 1.5-2mm. *just to be sure that you know. . . . . . the tone of the guitar WILL change when you scallop more than a couple of frets. *not better or worse, just different. *scallops feel sooooo nice though. *(i did my UV777bk)

I think I would also want to scallop my UV's neck(last 4 frets) too when I get it in June. But it's going a lot of guts to scallop a brand new UV neck. I did it on my JS100 and now I don't think I ever want to play on any guitar which does not have it's last few frets scalloped. I really makes a big big difference, to me that is.

Just finished a full scallop on my beaten-up Epi SG this morning. I love it to bits, and I'm going to start on an Ibanez neck next week. You should be fine if you take your time, and the UniversalJEMs guide is a good place to start.

Well I did it. I scalloped the last 9 frets of my UV777GR neck to the top of the side dots with no problems. The inlays are still intact and coated it with gloss. I haven't played the guitar yet as I'm waiting for the gloss to dry I'll fix it in the morning

Scalloping

greetings all

I'm new to this scalloping thing, and am unsure exactly what it does to the tone. *I do play a sitar, and if anyone has seen/played one, they'll be aware of the floating frets. *However, this works because of sympathetic strings (resonating when specific notes are sounded) and the bridge and hollow body interface.

If then a guitar fret is scalloped, the string may not even make contact with the fretboard, so is the note thinner or more hollow in its sound?

Any thoughts appreciated
