Scratches

Hey everyone.

I have some small scratches on my guitar ( and one big one ) and I'd like to get rit of them. Does guitar polish work for those kind of things? Or should I use something else?

Talk to Darren I think he posted before about the Fender Maguires polish for guitars! Heard nothing but good things about it, but I think you need a buffer won't work by hand. Don't quote me on that~!

Re: Scratches

i worked at a detail shop for a dealership (big time, i know) but the sales guys would always complain about a little scratch they found here or there... our rule of thumb was if you can run your fingernail across it and feel it, then its not coming out. but then again cars are different.

Re: Scratches

Today I'll try cleaning the body and using some turtle wax on it. Maybe it will work.....

Re: Scratches

Depending on how bad the scratches are you can buff it out. Major scratches(as in scratching the finish but has not hit the wood yet), you can fill with super glue. The trick is to use either a toothpick or a fine tip razor and drop *one drop* of super glue on the side and let it run into the scratch as you slowly trace the scratch with the toothpick/razor.

Some guitar polishes will actually fill scratches, but not all. Alternatively, I've found that the stuff that fixes scratches on cd's to work out ok as well.

I've had to fix a $5000 PRS Custom 24 using the razor blade method before. Mind you, you'll probably need to do some buffing to level off down the glue if it's too high. I usually work with 800-1000 grit sandpaper wrapped around a small block to level it down. Once it's level switch to a 1200-1500 grit and then use some buffing compound. The Turtle Wax polishing and finishing compounds found at automotive shops work ok.
