setting intonation on jem with lo pro

the intonation on my jem is a little off, but i don't have the lo pro intonation adjust tool.

how would you go about doing it without one?

i read the duirections at ibanez rules, but i still do not understand

Re: setting intonation on jem with lo pro

Do you understand how / why intonation adjustment works?

Without the adjustment tool, it's a lot of trial and error. Get the string in tune with the 12th fret harmonic. Fret the string at the 12th fret. If it's not in tune, you need to loosen the string, loosen the saddle screw and (a) move the saddle forward if the 12th fret note was flat or (b) move it back if it was sharp. Tighten the saddle screw, tune up, and repeat the process until the 12th fret note is in tune.

Which part are you having trouble with?

well i have done intonation adjustments on all my other non floating trem guitars.

however i have never done one on a floating before.

are the saddle screws the little black ball things that are right at the edge of the trem where the bridge pickup starts?

You don't need to loosen the string(s), you can use the bar to go down to slack. This doesn't work great on the high E (as it doesn't go all the way down to slack) but it will still kinda work.

It is best to slacken the string and do the adjustments with the nut open, takes only a few mins, really is simple.

I agree with this, put new strings on, leave the nut open, tune to pitch, then one by one, intonate each string by de-tuning it, adjusting, and then retune and repeat till your octaves are ok. Thats the way i do it and i find it works, takes time but you will learn alot from doing it if you havent before.
As for tools, you just need allens keys and a few screwdrivers. Oh and a good set of ears!.

Re: setting intonation on jem with lo pro

My favorite method on floating trem guitars is to shim under the fine tuners and screw the claw way in so the bridge is solid and set at the neutral angle. Then I do the intonation(detune a string before trying to push the saddle away from the neck). Once the intonation is set, retune all the strings, lock the nut, remove the shims and back out the claw screws till the guitar is back to pitch. I've done a hundred this way and it works great for me. Of course, YMMV......and please use a good tuner. I prefer a Peterson Strobe but am growing to like my Korg DT2000.
