Setting up a Jem & Lo Pro

Dear all,

Since I bought this guitar second hand I have given it a full overhaul, but am not particularly good at setting up, especially when it comes to the lo-pro!

I've got it in all right, and it works fine, doesn't lose tuning etc. However the strings are too high, and I know to lower them I need to reduce the height of my posts. I think the whole thing is pretty low already and won't go down much further (or it affects the amount of potential whammy action).

I want the strings Steve Vai close to the fretboard!! The reason I say this, is I am learning 'For the love of God' and there's a bit where Steve pulls the whammy in so far, all the strings knock the 24th fret (if that makes sense)??

I'm thinking it may be the neck, is this likely or have I just set up the lo-pro incorrectly?

I'm not sure how much 'stretch' on the strings I am supposed to achieve by pushing the trem into the body. Can anyone tell me if you play an E what note do you end on if you pull the whammy all the way in (approx)?

Thank you

Re: Setting up a Jem & Lo Pro

Jaden, he means that his action is lowering when he does pullups, which means he can't use the full range of his trem because it frets out. My RG550 does the same thing and its always stopped me from using that guitar as much as I'd like. I don't think rich's guide really covers solutions to that.

Raise the action or shim the neck

Re: Setting up a Jem & Lo Pro

If you need to lower the action without lowering the trem, you need to add a neck shim.

Re: Setting up a Jem & Lo Pro

And.....If you want the action "Steve Vai" low...then it really needs to be in the "medium" range since Steve's string height isn't really that low
