Setup help

So here's the situation with my UV777PBK:

- it came straight from the box to me, so it never had a setup done anywhere other than the factory, which judging from the ridiculous action and poor intonation isn't worth much.

I started by dropping the trem height, but what I found was that the action just wasn't right. So after some reading and checking measurements, I pulled the shims out from under the nut. I wasn't quite sure if I could get away with no shim, and it's a bit close as far as open string buzzing, but I can live with it until I find some new, smaller shims. In any event, this transformed the guitar, and the action is now about identical to my JEM.

The oddity I have is that the trem height seems very low to me, despite the action at the 24th fret being right at ~1.5mm. The thing is almost buried in the trem cavity. I really don't have anything to compare against, but the angle is correct (slightly canted forward). If I put the pup selector in the middle position, the trem arm just clears it without touching.

Does anyone have any pics of their UV777 trem height/angle I could take a peek at?

Re: Setup help

You need a neck shim at the body side of the neck joint.

Which part of the trem baseplate is parallel with the guitar's top? Should be the bottom.

I had a similar problem with my RG 20th, btw. The trem arm would touch the pickup selector switch when in the middle position, but the bridge was set up correctly and the action was good. I had no choice but to angle the trem back just enough to clear the switches and now it's good. I won't use a shim if I don't have to, I like maximum contact in that area.

And here's some pics on Rich's site:

I used Rich's pic to try an show (roughly) the height the trem is at. The red line is supposed to represent the body of the guitar (note that because the pic is at an angle the perspective is off... the height at the back of the trem would actually be a bit lower than the red line would have you believe):
