shielding (foam)
So I heard that foam behind the pickups was a good way to shield, I am wondering what kind of foam? I heard that mousepad cut up works, but i think thats a bit thin... Would basic household sponge, cut to fit behind the pickup work well? It will fit perfectly and fill the open spots well, I am just wondering if that material will work well to shield? thanks

Re: shielding (foam)
foam for shielding? that's weird. shielding must be done with copper foils or aluminum foils, or even graphite paint. i think putting foam behind the pickups is just to contain pickups squealings and springs noise.

Re: shielding (foam)
I guess he means stuffing foam around the pickups, just like Satch has his guitars done.
I will try with regular sponge...

Re: shielding (foam)

Re: shielding (foam)
So what exactly is the purpose of "foaming" a pickup other than to prevent it from moving? I'm really curious to find this out as well.

Re: shielding (foam)
you get over tones but the pickup doesnt reall pickup the tones, its just sound bouncing around the inside of the cavity and u hear it bounce off the strings
i have a 7 string carvin had a issue i always heard it and it annoyed me
one slution, is bolt a pickup strait into the wood so there no pup ring this helps a little, the other thing was a i had a custom bartolini pup in my 727
and i had a reverse mold made with plster of the bridge cavaty
then have another negtive made, then made another reverse of it again, having the same are to work with as i would on a guitar
then i placed the pickup in it and poured epoxy all into the mold i had
then had studs and sleeves....and actually had to press the entire pickups into the body with a vise and towels and wood, the pikcup was solid, had no microphonics at all!!!
