Should I be worred about my Edge + Studs?

So, finally took some pics.

I've an '89 FP that I've had for over 10 years now. I've always been a bit confused, because it has OFR studs, I guess. And no stud inserts at all. Don't know why. Nevertheless, the guitar stays in tune.

You can see the whole guitar in here: http://ameba.lpt.fi/~vilkmati/Sontaa/Kuvia/DSC00915.JPG

And the studs look like this. They are 6mm wide and 43mm in length:

Would it cause some problems to get ordinary Edge studs and stud inserts? I'm a bit worried about the depth of the holes, because these studs are 43mm long.

Here's also a few pics of the Edge itself. Should I be worried about the knife edges? They seem quite worn and messy after all:

Sorry for the bad pics. Couldn't get any better ones.

Those aren't OFR studs ... maybe from one of the licensed vendors. I don't see any reason why you couldn't switch to Edge studs and anchors. Those studs aren't doing the knife edges any favors.

The real question is what are those studs doing in an 89 FP? Is there any evidence that stud holes had been plugged/filled?

I've no idea where those studs have come from. Does anyone recognize them if they aren't OFR ones? There's a little paint missing around the stud holes in the body, but the holes look normal. Well, normal for these kind of studs.

I've never had problems staying in tune. They just seem out a bit strange

How wide are the anchors, by the way? Seems I can't find that info anywhere

Could they be some kind of screw you might find at a hardware store? If it works and stays in tune they way you like then let it roll man.

Yepp. I guess I'll just buy nails that's big enough and put them in there instead

Naaaaah, they're no normal screws, I can tell you that. And they stay in tune the way I like it. They do stay in tune.

Here's some whammy work and it stays in tune pretty well IM:

Those could be OFR studs, but they would be older. My late '80s Kramer had similar studs.

If it works, then I say leave it.

My brain tells me to leave 'em as they are but my eyes want normal studs

Don't know. Maybe I'll leave them like this for a while.

Here's a pic of the holes in the body:

Cleaned the fretboard, too:

And sanded the back of the neck:

Those holes have been plugged before. You can clearly see the remnants of the job that was done to put the new inserts. Personally, I would put the Ibanez studs with the locking inserts in there and remove those OFR (if that's what we want to call them) studs and inserts from there.

You can also see the damage the stud is doing to the bass side knife edge:

OK. So do you think there would be problems because of that damaged knife edge? Would love to have a Lo-Pro on my FP, but cannot afford one for a while.

Can't you just rip off the knife edges from the side and change in new ones?

Apparently it is possible and someone here has replaced them before besides Rich.

Re: Should I be worred about my Edge + Studs?

I have seen studs like those before ... they are meant for a trem. I don't remember who made them, but I haven't seen that style with an original OFR. Maybe they are made for easy retrofits. Doesn't really matter.

You certainly could switch to the Edge studs if you want/need to. The real question is how well is it working now? If it works smoothly and stays in tune, leave it alone. If they are causing problems, get them out of there. It does look like the original anchors were filled in somewhere along the line. Who can say?
